Does anyone think that families f*** kids over and then makes them bad the rest of their life?

Yes, I think that can happen if a child is severely mistreated early in life in particular and perhaps becomes a sociopath.

Yep certainly. A child is like a house with no windows or doors, they haven't yet built up their defences so what is said or done to them flows straight in and helps to mould there personality and brain structure. But it's never to late to make changes, the brain is extremely adaptable.

The same is true of the opposite, though. Like, if a kid is severely mistreated, it can affect his or her mental health.
However, giving a kid too much freedom (and therefore, being too nice) can, hypothetically, affect his or her mental health (for the worse). I tend to think me and my siblings suffer from the latter. Either way, I do think that everything is part genetics, part environment. I'm not sure anyone can change my mind on that.

Yes - but then we've all been kids at one point. I wonder how much my parents were damaged as children? Some people are just born that way and aren't affected much if at all by their subsequent situation...but if i recognize that my PD, for example, is caused by a mixture of genetics and upbringing - maybe the same could be said for my mother? It would certainly explain a lot of her behaviour, in fact i suspect she might have even been abused by the same person who abused me.
I guess the bottom line is that these situations are rarely clear cut. Which is unfortunate. So many suffering souls..... |
