The first time I went to college, I was going to school for the wrong reasons and in the wrong field for me; no matter what I tried nothing seemed to fit. It was a recipe for disaster as I was too young to know what I wanted then. Late bloomer and my untreated MH interfered with my studies too my in my case, so I too left.
Over time and with treatment, I found something I was interested in and went back much later, for an Associates and a just completed a Bachelor's in something I wanted to do. It made all the difference in the world finding something that I was really interested in pursuing.

I have an Associates degree I picked up on my way to my Bachelor's. Never used the Bachelor's. Went back to school in my 40s and got my Master's in a completely different field.

Ok in my country it is a little bit diferent. There are few people being a bachelor, what I associate as a bacharelato in my country, because this degree is extinguished. Maybe now we call Licenciatura to what your bachelor is.
Before Bacharelato was a degree previous to Licenciatura, that is the equivalent of three years of study. A Licenciatura is what I have after three years in medical faculty, something like medical school. I'm now on my fourth year, there are more two to go, and after 6 years I become a Mestre in Medicine, what I think it's somewhat like a Master's degree. It's confusing to compare, I have a licenciatura in basic health's science.

Mental health, bullying, and other life crap generally screwed this up for me. ¬_¬ I've spent years educating myself, however, and I have pretty much put my teachers to shame. Guitar, German, computers, English, ... yeah, ... sod 'em and their lack of faith in me.

I have a BA in the Social Sciences. My major studies were in Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, and Folk Studies with electives in Psychology, Human Resources, Organizational Behaviour, and Labour Relations. I would like to start a business dealing with mental health issues and stress in the work force as well as self esteem and skill development in the work place.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, E.I.T. certification, minors in Mathematics and English. I went to study engineering because science and math came pretty easy to me and I've always loved to find out what makes things tick. But now I don't really believe it's what I'm supposed to do. I'm trying to find out what that is at almost 42.

Didn't even finish highschool.
Due to emotional abuse at home, I was out at 15, and in YOI/HMP at 16. Fell further in with the wrong crowd til 20. 20 own place (finally), started working on personal growth. Pretty much got nowhere and burned out big time, and then was diagnosed with ADHD 6 years later. 2 years later, gonna get diagnosed with C-PTSD etc. So at 28, now I'm finally awake, as it were (well, I could be sleep typing for all you know :P) I can start getting to know me, and start trying out career paths. Might, big might, go to college this year, as an immature student, i'll fit right in, I've got a baby face, would be just to get GCSEs, or if can swing it, A levels, in the basic subjects, and hopefully the work will be challenging enough, that I bother to do it, unlike secondary school, then aiming for Uni in 2015. I've been out of formal education for 13 years (Holy *****), but i've done a lot of my own self study on a range of things. I think the biggest challenge will be the socialising and anxiety, though. I always said i've never been a big fan of formal education, but to be honest, i've started kind of missing it. Gonna be an interesting two years ![]() @Zwang: Yeah I know that feeling. "If only he payed more attention in class" "put in a little more effort, he could do great things". I missed half of year 10, and was still in the top class, screw you stuck up math teachers! Had a run in with my Art teacher as well. Which sucked, really loved to draw, paint, design, and look at my handsome self in a mirror whilst doing self portrait, in class, and asking for more time please, i'm just a perfectionist ![]() I'm with Zwang though. I've done alright self study, given every thing going on. Well, apart from guitar, I smashed my first one, sold my 2nd to get a train ticket outta there. What to do for a career, argh. |

I didn't finish high school, my first high school was horrible and did nothing to try and help me, my lawyer suggested we sue them, and we won. This continued when I went to a different high school that did the same thing and we sued and won again. After that I tried with a different school and I was smart enough to do everything but just couldn't keep focused when left on my own to do work. Not to mention the stress and pressure of getting things done on time made it so I was so anxious that I ended up getting nothing done. Therefore my mother, me, and my therapist decided it would be best to stop and try the GED at some point.
Honestly I feel like I've learned MUCH more being out of school than I did when I was in high school. There, the whole time I was trying to focus on getting things done and handing it in so I didn't really absorb much. Now I work on studying things I'm interested in like guinea pig/dog training, nutrition, behaviour, Japanese, reading, writing, computers, video editing, exercise, eating healthy, ect. I study more than I did in high school and actually find it fun rather than horrible and stressful. I plan at some point to try and go to college now that I'm a bit better than when I was in high school. |

Enrolled in a BFA program, and loved it. Now I'm taking a break after one semester to complete a one-year (two-semester) certificate in Foundations of Design. Then I plan to either return to my BFA, or apply to a BDes (Bachelor of Design) in Visual Communication, with a concentration in Illustration.
![]() I love reading people's responses. I have always been so fascinated by what other people's educational and career paths are. So inspiring.
