Who has done the ALS Ice bucket challenge? I did on Friday and donated what I could to the cause. Here is my video!

Posted on another thread; reposting in case you missed it.

As of 2012, ALSA has directed only 7.71% of its budget to Research. And not only that, 63.63% of their budget for the fiscal year was dedicated to "Other Program Activities" I'm not going to guess what those other programs are, but they sure are not research. And administrative cost? 10.54% and 18.11% for fundraising. What does this mean? That of the $100 I would give to this organization $7.71 of it would go to research, that's about as much as a test tube costs. Instead of donating and/or surviving off expiate which will account for only 7% research, donate to research based organizations like Angel Funds and so forth. Give it break already, there is no need to waste water and ice just so administration would get better cars and or clothes. Attached proof, but I beg you do your own research first.

Unfortunately this is the side truth about these very public fundraisers.

I like Matt Damon's ice bucket challenge. By using toilet water with a bit of ice he brings attention to the lack of clean water and lack of sanitation for millions of people throughout the world.

More information about that at http://www.water.org

It was still fun though, and the 250.00 I donated, well morally I feel better regardless of the facts.

Had to laugh at the horse ones I watched on FB.....one girl on the back of her horse dumped the ice water all over her & her horse...he took off & bucked her off.....she signed up for that, he didn't.

Another was amazing however this guy got on his totally bomb proofed horse, his horse jumped up into the back of a pick up truck (what a jump that was when some horses have a problem just getting into a trailer without a ramp).....then a driver drove the trick with the horse & the guy on his back over to under a tree where he had a bucket of ice water rigged up.......dumped the bucket over both the guy & his horse & the horse just stood there as if nothing had happened......no that's a well trained horse.....more impressive than the actuall ice bucket challenge.

Just not into doing stuff like that.....I have my donation places that I give to & don't have enough money for many extra's anyway.

@Yoda.....thanks for the facts.......it's important to know that information before donating to anything......I give where it all goes to research.......which reminds me....I still have to go to a lab & get my blood drawn for an anorexia research program that I got involved with......that's a next week project trying to get all my loose ends finished up.

To be cynical, most large charities pay their executives obscene wages. ALS doesn't appear to be an exception.

We pulled up their (ALS') 2013 tax returns to take a closer look at how their funds are spent. Here are the salaries for the leadership of the group:

Jane H. Gilbert – President and CEO – $339,475.00
Daniel M. Reznikov – Chief Financial Officer – $201,260.00
Steve Gibson – Chief Public Policy Officer – $182,862.00
Kimberly Maginnis - Chief of Care Services Officer – $160,646.00
Lance Slaughter - Chief Chapter Relations and Development Officer – $152,692.00
Michelle Keegan – Chief Development Officer – $178,744.00
John Applegate – Association Finance Officer – $118.726.00
David Moses – Director of Planned Giving – $112,509.00
Carrie Munk – Chief Communications and Marketing Officer – $142,875.00
Patrick Wildman – Director of Public Policy – $112,358.00
Kathi Kromer – Director of State Advocacy – $110,661.00

Sorry to be a grump but I'd rather continue to pay taxes based on my earnings to fund social health care for everybody which includes research where needed. And I'd be happier if that money went to carers and medical professionals first and not overpaid executives.

Obscene's a good word for it.

Leonardo DiCaprio did a sweet ice bucket challenge here to raise awareness about the tar sands. There's a message I can get behind.

Aww, geez, enough already. ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

I looked at my brother's feed on facebook and my 6 year old niece was nominated by some other kid to do an ice bucket challenge for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She named her nominations and she did NOT want that ice water on her. I think it is great to teach children about charity; when my son was young he helped pick out toys for Toys for Tots and canned food for food drives. I am not so sure my niece is going to walk away from her ice bucket challenge with a better understanding of charity especially if she doesn't use her own money (which she has because the tooth fairy gives her ten bucks per tooth).
