I have been sick this week, had to work every day but Thanksgivng Day, and then also lost power on Wednesday until this morning when it came back in the wee hours, lost due to the storm, but also had a house full of family visiting from out of state for Thanksgiving that arrived on Tuesday. This was recipe for disaster.

It has been an interesting holiday: no electronics with teenagers climbing the walls and not appreciating playing old fashioned "stupid" board games (direct quote); or heaven forbid we go outside let alone play in the snow; a toddler afraid of the dark as there were not enough candles for him (nothing like scaring your nephew when he comes to visit); scrounging for food as everything had planned were baked items and everything else was closed on Thursday to go out; then the emergency rations are soups and microwavable things, as the microwave is all that was on the generator along with the fridge, heat, and water pump;then becasue there were no lights outside, the porcupine entered the yard, tagged the dog, emergency visit to the vet on Thanksgiving; getting up at 3-4 am every night to feed the generator and not getting sleep is not helping me to get better; and not to mention it kills me that a 25 lb turkey wasting in the fridge that has gone bad by now that will have to pitch as it has been defrosting too long, so nothing like adding a touch of food poisoning to the holiday to top it off.

Now that the electricity is back on I am going to head in this morning to the store see if there if there are any turkey, turkey legs, or something turkey or even ham that can make some fashion of thanksgiving dinner for the kids before they leave as I know they won't have a chance to make or have one once they go. I hate that they came all this way to see me and this is what happened.

I am just glad to have seen them, hopefully can emphasize that even if less than desirable circumstances. I so miss them as I see them so rarely, my niece and nephew are growing so fast, that even with the struggle the last couple of days, at least we were together so to me that is what made my Thanksgiving. I'm not so sure they'll see it that way through all the grumbles and complaints but will miss them when they are gone.

However, I too am so relieved every stayed safe. Thankful that the generator did what it was supposed to do keeping us warm and fed, and will be glad though to put it and the gas cans away, and sleep the rest of this weekend. Hopefully they will have safe travels home before the next storm hits.Giving thanks this Thanksgiving for family and electricity.

WOW! What a crazy chain of events! It sounds like everything turned out ok in the end. Just imagine the stories your family will have about this Thanksgiving. :-)

Thats awful what you went through especially on Thanksgiving when everyone gets together. I do have to say it must have also been a little fun if you can understand that because a trying time also brings families together too and im sure your guests must have felt for your situation, hopefully, and i do hope you can have another day where you can celebrate like christmas. i know how bad the storm was as we were stuck in the house because there was a driving ban and my husband couldn't go to work for over 1 week. we actually had the national guard go down our street to help us get to the store by walking.Good luck and have happy holidays!!
Thanks for this!

Aww Fresia... that does sound like an... um, "interesting" Thanksgiving. Wasting the whole turkey would just kill me too, yikes! I'm glad you all survived and got to spend some time together though - and yup, think of the stories for years to come!
Thanks for this!

Fresia, your story reminds me of the Chinese curse "may you live in interesting times."

Rough as it was, at least you have a gennie to run a few things. Imagine what it would have been like without the generator!
Thanks for this!

All in all we REALLY were fortunate especially to have the genie and could still get out of the house. PLus I thought the family time without all the gadgets was kind of nice. However, not everyone was as fortunate as we were, that just wasn't the case everywhere. All of the power has finally been restored around here now and am glad that that is the case for everyone; worry so much when there are those that are going without in these temps especially. Side note, one store has even brought in more turkeys, it turns out, recognizing what has happened, for more dinners to celebrate later at reduced costs; I was able to cook them a Thanksgiving dinner before they left on Saturday. It was a nice way to close out the week.

It's funny, I got a text from my niece from the road last night," Electricless isn't as bad as I thought it would b, especially cuz u were there Auntie." Awww, even through the grumbles and complaints, it wasn't as bad as it seemed for them either. Whew.

Ugh, sounds pretty bad. I sorta know how it feels, we have recurrent power losses here.
Thanks for this!

I would also hate to waste food.

But that's pretty much all I would hate.
Some of my best memories were made because of some kind of duress....It seemed to have brought us all together somehow and made us extra appreciative and extra resourceful.

I'm strange, I guess.
