Nasty looking little things! I used to call my son Sea Squirt because he loved going to the beach. Then I found out there really was such a thing! Grossest living creature??

Oh he's cute. Just kidding. That is pretty gross. The only thing I could top it with is a waterbug. Waterbugs are the grossest living things in the world to me. The first time I ever saw one was 2 years ago when I moved to Philadelphia. In NY, we did not have waterbugs. On a summer night in Philly, you are guaranteed to see these creatures, unfortuantely you might see one scurrying across your kitchen floor!!! One night I saw one and I didn't know what to do. I took my broom and... BAM! I smashed it in pieces and guess what? The anntenae were still moving!!!! They are actually giant cockaroaches. But they don't come to eat your food, they appear regardless of how clean your house is, and (thank god) they don't multiply like roaches. I am living in my new house now and I'm hoping that I won't see any this summer. I doubt that. I'm still in the city. Grossest living creature??

LOL. Interesting topic. I don't find the seasquirts all that gross though. They're kind of interesting. Definitely not pretty... and maybe they have nice personalities? Grossest living creature??

For me, the grossest living creature is the earwig. eeeeeeeew. I hate them. Don't even want to see a picture of one.

They are classed as pests because they have a negative impact on the marine ecosystem.

There are NATIVE seasquirts which are fine - they are kept in place with nature's usual checks and balances in the food chain.

But the problem is an incursion a species that is a foreign invader (Styela Clava). They cause some problems in the ecosystem - and the biggest issue is that they attach to mussel and oyster lines, suffocating shellfish. Not very good for people in the seafood industry who make their living off harvesting shellfish Grossest living creature??

They are actually kinda gross - they have leathery icky skin.

Just to clarify, I don't have to play with them or anything - our job is to work out how to get yachties and boaties and fishing people to regularly clean and antifoul their vessels, so that the sea squirts don't spread from one location to another and affect more harvests.

So it's social marketing stuff - changing people's behaviour to create a socially desirable outcome.

It's fun cos I get to go and hang out on some really awesome launches and yachts at the marinas!!!!
