I think it really depends on your age. I have lived alone a couple of times. I had small kids and it was pretty rough trying to raise them with working and doing what I could to keep a roof over our heads. lived alone again as I was older and it was better. only had me to worry about. didn't have to answer to anyone. if I wanted to go out I went out. if I wanted to stay home I did. it was ok but yes at times it got lonely but I did fine.

I have lived alone off and on for years. I think I prefer to live alone. I am responsible for my bills and my mess, I don't have to clean up after anyone else or worry about if a light is left on....cuz I did it!
Sometimes there is loneliness, but you can go out and visit friends if you want. I am pretty independent and a loner anyways, so it depends on how you are. BJ

Thank you girls, for sharing some pxeperience
My roommate raised this question again asking me please move out because there is so little room for her and her boyfried and she says it effects negatively on their ralstionship i told her it`s not a must and that i didn`t want to move out On the other hand i thoguht of opportunities that i can have of starting a life on my own...But i think i will wait untill i graduate. I this i will insist on staying here and if she moves out will look for a roommate because this appartment is too expensive But i am a loner too. I love being on my OWN adn i am USED TO IT. But i am afraid of danger for women who live alone and of loneliness because i don`t have lots of frieds. I just had a dream of living alone for a while |

some cities have free courses on keep your home safe. making safe places within the home and such. take a self defense course too. it is very important to be able to protect yourself living alone or not. you will enjoy living alone I think. kind of scarey at first but you get use to it.

I totally agree with Bebop and think a self defense class is a great idea and am looking into it myself. I have lived alone for over a year now- granted I'm 23 still. I do get lonely sometimes; but, you can still meet people; I do eventhough I can't drive and probably will never be able to drive. Good luck

I miss living alone now and am craving to move out on my own for a while longer.
About the self defense thing, its always a great thing to learn. But when it comes to things like rape, most of the time its done by someone you know, not a random guy. While it still does happen, its not nearly as often as you might think. I would look into self defense just simply for walking around at night and the chance of getting mugged. If you look at the statistics for violent crimes agaisnt women, its an alarming number of cases that happens from boyfriends, aquaintences etc... typically not from strangers. |

Hi Ladymcbeth,
I lived alone for 20 years and I love it. While a self defense class is something to look into, I have never taken a class in it and I really don't see it as being necessary unless you are planning to travel alone. Anyway... the biggest thing to living safely alone is to make sure that you live in a good neighborhood (low crime) and that you get to know your neighbors. Also... wherever you go... grocery shopping, etc. always carry your cellphone. Most likely you will never need it to call the police, but it does come in handy if your car breaks down or if you get lost trying to someplace (mapquest and others are not always the best at giving directions). I've lived alone for 6 years (age 23-now), and it's been a great thing for me.
I have a dog, so that helps with the loneliness, just having something around that makes noise and keeps me on a schedule. I'm not very tidy in general, but the state of my apartment is a great indicator of my mood. I don't worry about safety; I live in a good neighborhood in a small city and know my neighbors. When I go home alone late at night, I always text the person I was with to let them know I got home OK. They might not be concerned, but it gives me peace of mind that someone would know whether or not I got there. There are some days, though, that I wish someone was there who could see me and tell me I need help. It's hard to recognize that on the bad days, and roommates were good at that. |

I currently live alone with my daughter because my husband will be gone for a few months. It's extremely hard because of the Fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. I also can't drive. If you are very independent and can drive, don't have a disability, it could be a great thing. People come and go in life so to live with them really isn't a great thing because it probably wouldn't be forever.

Yes, I've lived alone for EONS!-last year of college, during all grad school and in apts. I don't believe in living together before marriage.
