I have been running 5 different distribution of Linux for years (Multi-Boot), and have changed what File System I use by now (it's somewhat dated now) but used to use the Reiser file system on partitions that will have mostly a lot of small files on them.
Now I know Hans Reiser (the developer of that file system) was convicted of murdering his his wife (in it's time it was a good FS) but had no idea until now about a small joke having to do with that fact, and the code he wrote for the Linux File System..... Take a look at this (for a slight chuckle at least) Murderer-developed file systems introduce new features |

Sorry, I guess I missed the funny part. It is sad to hear of someone with a genius mind to fall victim to the basest passions and cause harm to another human being.
Linux has a lot of good things going for it.

BTW - Android OS uses a Linux kernel, just in case you didn't know.... |

Yeah ... that's why Wikipedia isn't bad for a quick review to get a basic understanding, but it's not the best definitive source.

Didn't expect that. On the subject of Linux, I was occasionally using Mint with KDE, and was using XFCE on my netbook, but I just don't bother with it anymore, because I get what I need and more from Windows 8.1 or 7. Do sometimes miss it, though. Might set it up again, but now I've got a UEFI system which kinda made things a bit different, so IDK what sorta headache installing Linux via dual-boot will be. x_x Will give it a go at some point - stil got my partitions.
Getting a Windows 8.1 tablet very soon, and must admit, it's kinda tempting to stick Linux on it for a laff, but I don't wanna fudge up Windows 8.1 and be left with a brick.

Just don't like Windoze at all (and yes I have seen and used 8.1 on other peoples systems), it's still not stable enough to run servers on in my option, very venerable to viruses, - and WORST of all - it constantly phones home about everything - can't even (out of the box and without violating any of the EULA) install a copy to flash drive for emergency use.
And WTF is the big secrete about ALL the source code (mind you most distribution of Linux give you ALL of that - a few you might not get the source for a few of the appz, drivers, exc. but the main OS sure do in every case). I mean just what exactly is Micro$haft hiding - most people probably wouldn't even look at it anyway - so what are the afraid of, the the few (like me) that do look at the source code are going to discover some sort of backdoor they put in there and lock it on them? |

I used to be big into linux, back when debian was the hot ticket and none of the distros had a GUI.
Even though I am a linux expert, I still recommend windows, w7 is the best OS of all time atm. Also, the linux community tends to be very hipster just like the OSX community. The good thing about linux over osx though is you get all the incompatibility and lack of support, for free. (yes, I know osx is based off unix so you can save that cliche comment I know you are about to pop) Also there's nothing funny about guys having to go to jail because their wives cheated on them.

I run Mint Mate LFS on my desktop for work and dual boot Win 8.1. Mint Mate is a nice and workable operating system at this point, even with a multiple oddly rotated monitor setup.
Where linux shines is as a home server, however. I have some old hardware running Mint with a ZFS raidz2 pool. I feel like my data is pretty safe from bit rot and drive failure with that. I used to run a Debian raid5 server on it. I like how easy it is to automate things with bash scripts. Windows has power shell but it's more difficult to work with the windows service/init system. I don't have any particularly strong preference for end user operating system. If you use SSH a lot and are doing development for *nix servers, it's nice to be able to test on a similar host OS during development rather constantly spinning up VMs in Windows. For casual use, Windows 7/8 are easier. The new file systems like btrfs and ZFS are neat for large data stores. I just use ext variants for day to day ![]() |

Well, right now I am using ext4 for ALL my HD partitions. But I am actually getting ready (hopefully in the next day or two) to totally Re-Install ALL my OSes. - And wile I am at it Re-organize all HD partitions. There are newer versions of every distribution I am using - and the partitions never really were thought out. I just have one partition per distribution right now, with /tmp shared.
I think I am going to go with ext4 as the /boot partitions, and btrfs for everything else, but debating or if I MIGHT want ext2 for /var/www and /var/ftp - Yes I do use them, and they are hosting not locally, but on the Internet. (and yep, my personal machine.) |
