Does anyone have naturally curly hair? I've been interested in wearing it out more lately, and often times I have to flat iron it because it's just toooo puffy/thick looking - which kind of gives it a square look lol. I'm a pony tail type person, but i'm coming into my own and kind of wanting to rock the natural. Does anyone have curly hair? Have you come up with a perfect routine for how to achieve wearing it out? Have you figured out how to make it grow?

I'm kind of like this:
Curly Hair
(when combed out)

or

Curly Hair

(when not combed)

Trying to achieve this:

Curly Hair

or

Curly Hair

I have curly hair and have started wearing mine natural. It sure makes life easier. I usually just use some gel or mousse and let it air dry. Mine isn't as long as the photos you showed though.

Is it healthier since you don't use a lot of products? Which is better, gel or mousse? Does it flow or do you find it kind of getting stuck in an odd shape (mine does lol) when it dries?

I have curly hair. Look up 'the curly girl method'. It revolutionised my hair life. Don't use products with sulfates or silicones in them. Use a LOT of conditioner and leave some of your conditioner in. Put argan oil in your hair when it's wet. Wear it in a braid/pineapple at night, never brush it, use a wide tooth comb and trim the ends regularly. Just condition it a lot. Do olive oil treatments too, or coconut oil.

I'd pick Delta Goodrems one - she's great.

I have curly hair. If I dry it just naturally without blow drying it, it gets those smooth curls hanging down....I still usually put it back into a pony tail or put it up with a clip.....but if I even think about brushing it....it gets the friz.

I usually just blow dry it while it's damp & it makes it straight...much more lately then it ever has before in my life. Not sure what is changing with it as I'm using the same hair products....I always shampoo & condition almost every day.

My hair was so bad after my last medical hospitalization with anorexia....that was about 10 years ago & it's taken all this time to get it healthy again.

I wonder why curly hair doesn't grow like other hair...I was wondering why. I trim the ends so any split ends are gone about every 6 months....but I have another friend who is from the Philippines & she cut her black hair & it's now longer than mine is already

tealBumblebee, ALL of those are very beautiful.
Does the person who cuts it have curly hair? Seems like a silly question, but they generally know how to cut it to give it a good shape.

I think I read somewhere that too much protein can make it frizz...

I have long hair because depression kinda makes you not give a darn. Occasionally I get it together.
I have learned to try to avoid heat and use lots of moisture. And buy hair toys to put it up or french braid it.

The top picture is beautiful!! I wish my hair would do that.

I have bi-textural hair curly on the top half of my head and straight on the bottom half... even my hair is indecisive. I just have to keep the underneath cut an inch or two shorter or it looks funny. It was straight when I was a child... maybe someday it will get around to being all curly. I do try to follow the curly girl method.

Straight hair just shows the length more as curly hair is scrunched up (for lack of a better phrase) which is why it appears to grow faster.

I either pick gel or mousse. Wash your hair, use a really good conditioner and leave it in as long as you can before washing it out. Then comb your hair with a pick comb. Flip your head over and crunch gel or mousse in. Blow dry upside down. I usually blow dry it to about 75% dry and then leave it to finish drying on its own. Make sure to do the crunch method when drying too (like close your hand full of hair and lift up). If I get a bit frizzy, I add a bit more gel or mousse after drying. Use it sparingly though as it can make your hair turn hard if you do. Less product the better you want to define your curls but not get the hardness. I also cut my own layers....layering your hair is important otherwise you end up with pyramid hair.

Sorry I have been so late in replying back to this.

Thank you all for all the advice!

I had never heard of the curly girl method, but it looks like it makes sense. Don't know if the one I saw was right, but it used a lot of products - of which I use very minimal - usually just a leave in conditioner, gel if I have to on the edges.

I don't get my hair cut/trimmed so that may be an important factor i've been overlooking. When I get it layered (like once a year), it grows back quickly, but it never grows past a certain point.

I definitely do know and understand about it looking shorter because its scrunched up - people get on my nerves asking me if I cut my hair when they see it go from straight to curly cause I feel like that should be obvious as to why it is shorter.

I am going to wash my hair today so I will try some of the advice that i've been given and see if I can maybe post some pictures in the next few days as to what the results were!

OMG. I get so tired of those comments as well. Sometimes it's even backwards like if I have my hair straightened, ppl comment asking if I got it cut.....like WTF.

I have curly hair and I let it be free and wild! :P. I used to hate it as a kid but then in high school I decided to go crazy and cut it. Like boy short lol. I loved it! Now it's halfway down between my shoulders and elbows. I have found that deep conditioning/ hot oil treatments 2x a month really works to keep the curls happy. Coconut oil is the best for it, but olive oil and baby oil works well too.

1. Heat roughly 3 tsp of coconut oil for 30 seconds
2. Put a decent amount of conditioner and mix it with the warm oil
3. Put it in your hair for a minimum of 2 hours, overnight is best
4. Wrap your hair in a towel or a hair shower cap thingies to keep the oil and heat in
5. Wash like normal

So far my hair has loved this routine.

I also only wash it with shampoo only 1-2 times a week, but rinse it every other day with water. This way it stays clean but has natural oil in it rather than getting stripped of it, which makes frizz.
