I have avoided the dentist for many many years because I can't handle the feeling of having my mouth wide open, not being able to swallow and that dreadful sucking thing they stick in your mouth. Then the dentist talks while busy and I feel obliged to make some some sort of response. Which of course, is impossible. But, I have had a hole in my back tooth for some years and it has now decided to start paining as well as not coping with hot or cold liquid. I have no choice. I have to get it seen to. Problem is, there is so much wrong in my mouth and I can't afford to have it all fixed at once. I just want this hole filled. The rest can wait. Fortunately, the dentist is a fairly close friend of mine. I'm not sure if that makes me feel better or not.

Anyway, I am terrified of my appointment later today. But at least this paining will stop.

So sorry, I feel your pain.
Have had some work done this year. It is certainly expensive.
Having a small mouth doesn't help...
Hope your experience isn't too traumatic.
Will be thinking of you.
Thanks for this!

I'm sorry that this prospect seems a bit daunting Sabrina

I don't much like dentists either.

But it's okay, you're right - you really don't need everything worked on right now, you have one specific area that you're going in for, and I'm sure this can be fixed - albeit a bit of an intimidating process.

Let us know how you go!

Good luck with your appointment....as you say, the pain will be gone and that's all that matters.

Thank goodness that's over. My husband came in with me which really helped keep me calm. It wasn't at all painful but just very frightening. I was shaking like a leaf. I have a temporary filling and must go back in six weeks for a permanent filling. I will let her take a look at the rest of my teeth then and let me know what else needs doing so I can plan and budget for it. They are very kind and are letting me pay it off. Don't have to pay for it in one go.

Thanks for the support

I'm glad that it worked out okay for you. Kudos to your husband and dentist for letting him come in with you. Sounds like you have a very caring dentist.

Sabrina, would it help to take a mild sedative before you go to the dentist? The oral surgeon I saw a few years ago did that. I have the same problem you do with all that crap in my mouth. Doesn't help that I have a tiny jaw. The doc had me so loaded up on a sedative I didn't give a hoot what they did. Or what about having them knock you out while they work in your mouth?
Thanks for this!

Liz, yes, if there is anything more extensive that needs doing, I am definitely going to ask her to give prescribe a sedative for me. It does help that I know my dentist personally. We have been close friends with her since we moved here and I do administration for her husband.

I had very poor dental care as a child; went to a dentist who was like a horse doctor, who frightened me no end, and it was painful. I mentioned this to my sister recently, and she concurred, going up the stairs to that dentist felt like a death sentence. We only went when a tooth had to be pulled.

My current dentist tells me how bad my teeth and gums are doing. I leave feeling bad.

I apologize going on about my own dental stuff. I empathize with you.

I haven't been to the dentist in several years. Mainly because we can't afford it. The last time I had four fillings, two root canals & one extraction. I needed more work done, but, we didn't have the funds. I hope your appointment went well.

Well, it's been a few days now and I am still having to take pain medication at least twice a day. The aching should of stopped by now. The tooth is no longer sensitive to hold or cold but dang, it aches.
