I'm nervous.

I've finished my classroom training, and have had my listenning in shift, so tomorrow I go live for my first supervised shift. A trainer will be listening to me take calls and giving me feedback, and writing a report for staff. Then I'll get feedback on Mon.

I'm really hoping that I don't get any suicidal callers.

A little bit of nerves is normal and healthy.

You've had classroom training, a listen-in shift, and you will be supervised.

You work at a distress center, so the calls will be from people who are emotionally unstable. Consequently, it's essential that you remember your training, and never deviate from it. Never.

I'm sure you know this, but all calls to a distress center are potential suicidal calls. However, that's not something to worry about if you execute your training.

Working in a distress center is a noble profession.

Congratulations!

((((Splitimage)))) Good Luck, with your new job! Just remember your training and have confidence that your trainer is there to not just write reports back, but as support to guide you.

Best wishes for tomorrow. I'm sure you will do just fine as you have gone through the training.

(((Massive hugs))) for you. What a good and brave soul you are.

I'm certain you will do fine. You always have compassionate and kind things to say, and are so level-headed and thoughtful.

Will you update us on how it was (without giving too much away, naturally)?

You are a brave soul. I'm interested in hearing how it goes. I assume you were once (probably more than once) in distress. How will this job affect your own mental health? Did they discuss that in your training? I ask because I consider volunteering as well. Afraid of trauma triggers.

Thanks everyone. Quick clarification - it's not a job, it's a volunteer position.

My shift went super well, even though we got one inappropriate sex caller who we had to hang up on.

Had one call that went super well.

My trainer was very complimentary and said I had great rapport with all the callers. So that felt good.

As for triggers - the screening process is very thorough, it's actually really hard to get accepted as a volunteer at this distress line. I had to wait two years to even be considered because they won't take you if you've been a psych hospital in the preceeding 2 years, and then I had to answer a lot of questions about my stability and support networks. They also talk a lot about self care in the training sessions.

I'll get official feedback on Mon. as to how it went, and then I'll be scheduled for my second supervised shift.
