I've had 2, and done a lot of family tree research too. One of the tests included health information. I found it all really helpful, especially understanding myself and where I came from. It hasn't made difficult things go away but knowing what some things are called and why they happened has been useful.

What do you think? Would you have a test?
Thanks for this!

Oh I think it's a great idea under different circumstances to get one, sure. Especially for health related reasons.

My diagnoses (MI) pretty much speak for themselves and my family tree is quite transparent in terms of where my particular MI ones came from, mental health wise. Don't know if I personally under my circumstances would have/feel a need to get one.

[feeling foggy, kind of hope my response made sense]

I would love to be able to afford a DNA test just because I'm curious about genetics. I know mostly it would say Northern Europe but what else and how far back could it go. What percent of Neanderthal would there be?

I've had one. It was fairly interesting, though the ancestry part was pretty broad for me. I also got a listing of SNPs with no descriptions, so I've had to try to track down what some of them do. So far I've found I have alot of bad ones, and a couple that are really mean, but at least none of those hyper-aggressive cancer ones.

In the US, they're about $100 but you can get free ones if you volunteer to go into a research programme, the results are a lot more detailed than Northern Europe nowadays! It's because more and more people get tested, so the databases get more and more accurate. As for Neanderthal, it depends on your genes. I just found it all really interesting, especially when you start reading more about it. Have a look at 23andme and Family Tree DNA, you'll see what I mean.

Never needed one. I guess if one was offered I would do it ... but it would probably come back as saying all I have is RNA instead of DNA. Weirdo.
