I have been getting a lot of calls from phone numbers that I do not know recently, most with area codes not even from my area. I looked up these numbers online, and all of the ones not from a familiar area code were from some sort of college related thing, which makes sense because I am going to be a senior in high school this fall and I put my number down when I took the PSAT last fall.
But there have also been calls from the 206 area code, which is the one for the area I live in. For most of these numbers I found no information. Last week I got a call from a 206 number and looked it up in Google and it cane up as the number for King County Adult Detention. Why in the world would I be getting a call from that number? This morning I got a call from another 206 number, this one also the next three digits were the same as my phone number. This time I answered, as I rarely do. The caller immediately hung up. With the mood I was in, I called back. The phone rang and rang and rang for what seemed like minutes. There was no answer, and eventually a message from Verizon Wireless. What is going on? |

I get unknown numbers from random place calling me all the time and usually if I pick up no one says anything then it hangs up. I'm not sure what it's from but it's annoying

Sometimes these random phone calls are telemarketers, companies looking for surveys or other odd people.

If I were you, I would consider putting yourself on the national no call list that way if a telemarketer doesn't back off when you request it, you can legally take them to court.
You could also do what I do: make your primary phone number a cheap pay by the month prepaid. Basically, I use T-mobile's pay by the month prepaid which costs me $40 a month for unlimited talk and text and 1GB of data which is cheap compared to many other companies and has the benefit of allowing you to pay via prepaid phone cards commonly found in stores via cash which ensures your privacy. You don't have to give your real name to them unless you pay via debit/credit card and even then they don't keep logs of it. I also don't have a landline which makes it pretty much impossible for strangers or people finder companies finding my phone number or having it become public information. To provide an additional layer of privacy I use an Android app called "Burner" which lets me pay a few dollars a month for temporary disposable phone numbers which I give to companies or people who I think are likely to misuse my information or sell me out somehow if they need a phone number for whatever reason. Adopt a similar setup to mine and you will be immune to pretty much all kinds of bothersome people including telemarketers, crazy exes, and even debt collectors ![]() Last edited by Anonymous52222; Aug 08, 2015 at 09:53 PM. For the record, you don't have to be on the National Do Not Call Registry to take a company to court if you tell them to put you on their Do Not Call list (all companies are required to keep such a list) and they call you again.

I was getting so many phone calls it was doing my head in. In the end I had had enough and got a phone number that is listed anywhere (silent). The phone has gone silent. Yay!

I get them too. I think they're mostly telemarketers. I don't usually give my number when filling out forms online. Unless it's something where I need the person to have that. Those are usually companies which don't share your information with others. One way to reduce the calls is to opt out of having those company's affiliates contact you. Of course, I think some of them just get a call list & phone any & every number. We only have cells & if it isn't my husband or a work call (I work from home), then, I don't usually answer it. Not too many others have my number.
