OK, I don't know where this skunk is but every night something is making it spray & it's gotta be spraying right around my house. I have the basement door open (2 large sliding doors go out from the basement into the back yard). I have the windows closed right now as it's cooling down but the smell seemed to be coming in through the duck work which is open in the basement right now (it came untaped).....glad my dogs aren't out there because the smell is so bad it's like the skunk is right in side my house.

The smell is so bad it's making me sick & it's massivly triggering my migraine. I sprayed the fabreze air freshener for pet smells all around & it hasn't touched how horrible the smell is.

I am going to go take a hot shower & try to clear the smell out of my sinuses.

Skunks are so adorable.....but they do stink sooooooo bad. Wish I know what was making him spray all the time. I havent heard any coyotes around so don't think that's the problem....but something is definitely making this skunk mad almost every night after dark.......I the smell is filling my house.....so glad my dogs haven't been sprayed or they would become outside dogs quickly.

Sorry to hear that you have been skunked. I don't know what skunk smells like.

I know what it smells like when a tom cat sprays the door because he is feeling frisky. That is nasty enough. The way I fixed that was with washing the area and then spraying citrus oil around.

Finger crossed. Hopefully some-one here will be able to sniff out the problem.

Eskie, do you smell the odor the next day? If not you probably are smelling the skunk itself as it wanders around outside your house. There are non-harmful sprays you can use in the yard to encourage the little devil to go away. Eau de skunk is nasty!

Are you sure it's not hipsters smoking pot? Just joking, it sounds awful. I think you can buy fox urine (or some other kind of predator urine) at hunting stores to repel skunks and other critters from around your house.

Sorry to hear this... brought back a memory for me and made me giggle several years back one of my neighbors had a similar problem and yes, he used a live trap to catch the critter. Just make sure you utilize a tarp on top of the cage for relocation purposes, lol

Yes, humane trap is another option if there's only one skunk. Of course, you might catch a few feral cats and opossums before you get the skunk.

Woke up this morning with a horrible sore throat from the smell & the remains of the horrible headache it caused even after taking a hot shower for about 20 minutes trying to get it out of my sinuses.

LizardLady, I have been around wandering skunks.....nothing like this smell. It totally filled my house with the smell. That smell was way too strong for it just being a wandering through skunk. It is still lingering inside my house mildly this morning. I haven't had a chance to get outside & wander my farm around the house to see where it might have sprayed. I know that when skunks get hit by a car the smell is there for days......keeps away the turkey buzzards also until the smell goes away also. Interesting I commented about the skunk to my a neighbor that lives about 1/2-1 mile as the crow flies & she has been saying how horrible the skunk smell has been lately. It's like they spray something that's threatening them & we ALL get the horrible ordor.. I didn't realize that we had so many skunks around here as I never see them in the evening when I'm out. We are surrounded by woods so it's hard to know where the little monsters are hiding.

It was so bad last night it actually made me feel sick.

Here in the country....you catch one skunk & another will just come along to take it's place

Jo, great idea....think I will just invite some of the local ones to hang around my farm. Saw a gorgeous big red fox crossing the road the other day.

Oh Possum....you don't want to know either.....think of how bad rotten eggs smell then imagine a smell 100 x's as bad....& you have SKUNK odor.

Another friend/neighbor had their dog missing & when they found it he was having convulsions from being sprayed by a skunk. Wonder if he will ever learn.....he's a boxer & they are just playful by nature but not always the brightest breed of dog. My dogs don't get to run. They are my house dogs & I keep them tied on a really long cable to the front trees when they are outside. Leo only knows how to get into trouble so I have to be his brains for him.

Unfortunately skunk is just part of the territory......but I truly hate it when it gets as bad as it did last night.

Okay, I'm going to stop complaining when my apartment neighbors stand outside and smoke "skunk" and the smell floats in my open windows. It does smell like a skunk but nowhere near as strong.

The Chemistry of Skunk Spray

Quote:
How to get the stench out? Tomato juice won't do it. It's just a strong smell that attempts to cover up the smell of skunk. What you need is a chemical that will change the composition of the thiol group.

Fortunately, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide are cheap, mild, and will do the job. They are oxidizing agents, meaning they will attach oxygen atoms to the sulfur atom in the thiol pairing, and take away its ability to stink.

And if you're feeling glum about being sprayed by a skunk, cheer up. It could be worse. The chemicals are flammable, so under the right conditions, we could have had little striped flame throwers running around the woods.

Skunk repellent at the den...and hopefully the den isn't in the horse stalls! See if you can find it... predator urine or another repellent specially made works...

but the cheapest and quickest, if you don't have other animals that walk about the same area... hot pepper powder! Sprinkle it about and they get it on their paws and lick...

as for if it's sprayed places... spray those places down with a tomato based solution (including clothes and skin)... tomato juice etc works great to remove the smell=== at least it used to in MO... maybe their constitution had changed there?

Oh I have more than enough hedgehogs (they are soooooo cute) & mice to last me a life time. In reality that's what I love about living in the country on my farm.

With the skunks spraying at something the something gets hit with their spray & the rest goes into the air which we smell. Even Fabreze pet odor spray didn't neutralize or cover the smell in the air. I'm sure some settles on things but isn't observed the way the actual spray is on things. I went to the farm to care for the rescued stallions. Got back after 1pm & there was still lingering skunk odor. After being away & in fresh air it was more obvious....but after skunk smell & migraine from it even horse smells were making me nauseous this morning.

Lol....UK does have little skunks....those little stinkers will find their way everywhere

Skunks smell sounds terrible. There are some things in life that I can live without. Sounds like skunk smell is one of those things. My only contact with a skunk for my entire life will be watching an amorous Pepe le Pew trying to romance a kitteh cat in a cartoon. Mwah mwah mwah.............

Would it make any difference if you were able to hose the area down? Do skunks hibernate? Maybe I should google these little dudes. Sounds like Bambi lives on your property.

Hope your headaches ease up very soon.
