As part of the simplifying of my life, I'll be giving away almost all my books, as well as all the stuff I have which I don't use.

Non-attachment is an important objective I want to achieve.

I will start with material things.

I like to do this, too. Lately I can't stand having "stuff"...

I wonder if we should post in the other forum? The habits one I think it is...

Either way, I agree that simplifying is important.

I have started to do this with some of the railroad items I have. My daughter and her husband are big railroad nuts now, thanks to me. At least I know they appreciate it and it won`t end up in the trash. I had about 25,000 photos, negatives and slides destroyed in the flood of 2007. There were a lot of trains I photographed over the years that they will never have a chance of seeing. I wish I would have been able to give them those.....

I do sometimes think I am too materialistic...

When I moved flats earlier this year, I threw out a lot of unnecessary things. I've also sold one or two things. I feel I could still go further though. One thing I refuse to throw out is my books though, even if I have read them & am unlikely to read them again I still like having a full bookshelf.

I think a lot of it has come down to compulsive spending in the past, I tend to be very hedonistic. I'm trying to get into the mind set that I should make full use of the things I have rather than buying new things.

There's really not a lot I can justify buying at the moment. I even started to rent films instead of buying DVDs/digital downloads. I do like collecting films but I have too many... I could certainly sell quite a number of the DVDs I have. I think perhaps I'll limit myself to only buying films which I really really want to own.

In some ways I wish I could literally just pack all my belongings in a suitcase & move just like that. Having no attachments, being a free spirit & making my experiences my life. But at the same time, I've made myself a home & part of that is having belongings, so there is only so much I can cut down on. I certainly want be less materialistic though.

I know what you mean about the bookshelf. If I had an empty spot while I could still get out of the house, I would have it filled. I guess I am OCD about things not being filled...

I sold about 6 boxes of books...even though I hadn't read them in a while I miss them...they were my go-to books when I was depressed, like family. Just light mystery and sci-fi....but family.

I like my bookcase but I think I could live without it, as well as I could live without any of the things I own (which are not much). It is nice to make other people happy just by giving away the books. Helping people makes me happy.

I plan to keep a few books (approx. 15) but in the future I might even not need those.

The only thing that is stopping me from leaving and wander around the world is my dependence on meds.

Awesome! My family and I recently moved and I did the same thing. I basically sold or got rid of everything I didn't use or don't need, including my golf clubs which I *never* thought I would do! But I sucked at golf anyway.

But in reality, I decided to try to re-invent myself and that was part of the process.

I started simplifying things quite a few years ago. It gives me a feeling of great freedom. My last move I rode my motorcycle with the basics and then 1 car load of stuff. That was it. Next goal, move with just the motorcycle and maybe ship a few boxes of necessities to myself.

I replaced most of my books with a Kindle. Not quite the same as I do still miss the feel of having a real book in my hands and being able to turn pages, but it works well.

Non-attachment has been/is a goal I keep striving for.

It's just as in real life. All that what you not need is the uneeded lumber. You have to throw that out of your life boat or it might make it to difficult and heavy for you to row your life boat up the river that goes to heaven. That philosophy is awesome. God bless you and help you achieve this goal in life.
