Red Nissan '93 pick-up, presently leaking small amounts of oil but not from one place so I can't figure it out. All of a sudden RedRider's belly is leaking. When should I let her go? I don't know. We've been through a lot --- including --- colliding with an elk, buried in snow from sloping roof, broad-sided while parked and nearly totaled, both sides kicked in by angry homeless person when I refused to give him a ride...and numerous other "adventures" --- if anyone has an old truck and can advise about the oil leaks...

It could be from the front or rear main seals, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket. Those are usually the main culprits. I really wouldn`t worry about it leaking. If it still gets you from point a to point b and back to point a. Just keep an eye on your oil level. When it starts going through what you think is too much in a day, then it might be time to fix it, if it is worth, or put it out on the back 40 and retire it.

Bless you for this! I might just bring her to my local neighborhood mechanic and list what you said to maybe check out. You see, that's how a lady has to do it...she can't just pull up to the mechanic's shop all quivery and scared and blank about what is going on. Despite her age Red Rider has had more body work done than a Hollywood actress has plastic surgery...so she looks real fine. She's like a rolling ad for a guy who has a one-man body shop, and I have never used anyone else. And her milage is relatively low. The mechanic has offered to buy her and so maybe he has a vested interest. I get a few offers a year. No one should be this attached to an old truck. But I am. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING!!!

I hate going into a garage and being ignorred. I've gone in with male aquaintances and the service writer turns to him to discuss my vehicle. In most cases I am more knowledgable than my aquaintance. It really ticks me off. Then they phone me back to tell me they did a diagnostic and found out exactly what I told them was wrong and I get into an argument because I won't pay for that diagnostic. I also find them often trying to pass things over on me assuming I know nothing and will pay for whatever they tell me they did.

I have now gotten into the habit of demanding to see the work order for my approval before the vehicle goes into the shop.

===========================================================

the last time I took the car in they tried to tell me I needed new tires. They kept insisting. Once I demanded to know the remaining tread depth in 32s they realized I knew what I was talking about and backed off.
Thanks for this!

Wow. My truck is a 1993 and this is the first year of her life she has leaked oil. I am a demanding Mama! Your comment was such a comfort! Thanks!

Yes, I have a problem now with tires because after a certain amount of years the Tire Store won't deal with the tires and won't provide the free rotation and tire change-over to winter tires, even if they still have wear, like with my snow tires. I pointed out that the treads - were totally fine - with the tire guy - but they (The Tire Store) go by years...that's how they get you. So now I have to find someone else to put on the snow tires (snow forecasted for Monday)...which is going to be my friendly neighborhood mechanic. I am finding that because my anxiety has increased this year --- all the things I used to handle without a problem in the past have now become a big deal. I would say this is the absolute worst outcome of increased anxiety. I think I just need to do things despite the anxiety --- just to prove that I can. Thanks for sharing.

Me...born and raised in South Jersey. Miss the beach from my landlocked position, but it would be just rude to disrespect the Rockies, as they are right in my backyard. Still and all, I have a real deep fondness for your neck of the woods...yesiree...

Do you ever get back? You are, what, about a day's drive? I've lived about equal time on both coasts...can't believe I ended up inland...
