My husband and I were talking about a fax. My 15 year old stepdaughter says "what's a fax?". My husband says "are you serious, you don't know?" She says, "well, isn't it like an email for old people?"

The neighbours heard me laugh!

Yupper kids come up with some stuff sometimes.

One of my younger cousins(he's 12) saw our old polaroid camera. So I took a picture(can't believe it still had film and worked) and the pic comes out and he's watching it develop. He says "SO it's like a camera AND portable printer all in one? Does anyone else know about this??"

True story, one of the young women I worked with called it a "Faxy-smile". She said, I don't know where they get fax out of that though.

My niece said the same thing, she is 15. I took her to mailing center that has them because every one of my jobs I have needed them still, in addition to pdf's and jpegs, but continue use them now in the current position. They were kind enough to let me show her how to use them and all the functions on it. She was cute, "what a great machine but I will never need this, I have the computer" was her response.

The funny part was that she just got her first job and she has to fax, no computer; not only were they impressed that she knew how to use it but she even trained the other trainee in how to use it. She called me to tell me and also that, "Auntie, I didn't know that being old could be useful." Out of the mouths of babes. Bless her heart, her time will come.

Fax is short for facsimile; the idea is that modern computing
and telephone technology allows you to scan a document into a machine,
send a reasonable facsimile of that document over the phone, and have a
printer at the other end of the phone line translate the data and print that
facsimile for the benefit of the recipient. This has the advantage of sending
something close to an actual document over long distances in real time.

I know university people who insist on pdf files (documents whose file name
ends in .pdf, readable by Adobe's Acrobat Reader software) of journal
articles because only pdfs constitute reasonable facsimiles of the actual
printed journal or the articles contained in it. If wonder if DocJohn uses pdf
files of journal articles as part of his job when physical copies of a given
journal are out of reach for him.

A couple of months ago we were talking about putting my Mom's "HiFi" in storage when she moved up this way. My daughter also didn't know what a "HiFi" was.

Makes me think back to when I used to try get lyrics for my songs. I would have to push / pause / play / rewind / forward the tape deck and it would take ages. I quite fancy googling lyrics now

My granddaughter was 15 and of course was used to using cell phones. She had to use a regular phone one day. She picked up the handset and asked "Where's the send button?"

I think my daughter would freak if she tried to figure out a cassette tape. Of course, her boyfriend has a VCR and still plays VHS tapes.
Thanks for this!
