I have this big, 8 foot tall foliage growing over my privacy fence from the upper neighbor's yard. Both the neighbors and I had talked about it, and I didn't realize till he came over last night that it is poison ivy! It's HUGE! Though I've never had a problem with being allergic to it, I get a few itchy bumps when in contact, but not so bad. Recently I strung the dog shock fencing thru it, not realizing what it was, though I did notice the three leaves, etc. I got some pretty stubborn itchy places on my arms and even my face. Last night, the neightor informed me that it is poison ivy and he's going to remove it! and may necessitate taking down part of the fence to do the job. I gave him my long loppers and long handled garden claw. They are such nice neighbors, and I'm relieved that he's going to remove it! It's such a huge thing, I don't want to mess with it!

How far did you jaw drop when you found out?

You're probably really lucky that you hadn't had a more allergic reaction.

Your neightbor might try some of that spray on kills everything type stuff. I might knock back enough to make it easier to handle.

Good Luck

Hi Patty.... Poison ivy is nasty stuff.. I cut some ugly shrubs down along side my son's house a few months ago. And all these vines were growing up the side of the house. I thought they were weeds, so I just pulled them all out. A few days later I broke out in a few "itchy bumps", and the next thing I knew, I was covered with the stuff. I was a walking calamine lotion bottle for two weeks, not realizing it was spreading. I itched soooo bad, esp at night I was in tears. I tried everything from rubbing salt water on the "itchy patches" to out of desperation dumping "bourbon" all over me. lol... Please do not ask me why I tried burbon.. I would have been better off drinking it rather than swimming in it. All it did was make me stink. lol

Anyway my son bought me some 'Ivarest" . Good stuff!!! A tad expensive at $15 a tube, but well worth it..Stopped the itch immediately and dried up the poison ivy within three days. So if those few itchy patches you have start spreading, which I hope it doesn't, I highly recommend Ivarest.

One year I brought him to doc's... and the doc didn't know that I had brought him in for poison ivy... my son had raised blisters on his feet....
the doc diagnosised it as warts Poison Ivy tree...

until I told him... we're here for poison ivy...

do NOT burn poison ivy - it is very dangerous

The tree is still there and the neighbor returned my tools. He said he would see if it affected him before diving into the removal of it. We may have to do some scientific stuff with killer chemicals...I don't know.

"Leaves of three, let them be." It's an old folk saying but it sure helps remind me to be careful.

I remember being little and I had it all over me. They were so afraid I was going to spread it to my eyes and mouth that my Mom bandaged my hands and arms up like a mummy. I sobbed and cried for hours on end.

Jan...I remembered the "leaves of three" as I was out thre near the plant overcoming my privacy fence! I'm going to have to talk to my neighbor about what to do about this. I have had some stubborn blistery outbreaks since workoing around it, though I have never had problems with poison ivy before in my life!

I just went over into the neighbor's yard...they are gone, and using using my lopper, cut several more of the trunks of this poison ivy tree. These are tree trunks! I just washed my arms with hot soap and water, and hoping I don't have a reaction!

There is also an Ivy Blocker - that you put on before you are exposed.

There was a story about poison ivy on the national news last night. Poison ivy is the bumber crop of this summer. I was so surprised. They said it's growing at a terrific rate all over the nation. Poison Ivy tree...

I saw that too, Jan!
It said it's due to "global warming and greenhouse gases?!" Who could know this?
They also said it's more "virulent" and affects people previously immune. I have always been resistant to it, not really bothered, and my female neighbor said she had never been bothered previously as well, but we were both comparing our blistery breakouts on our skin! This tree towers over the 8 foot privacy fence from the neighbor's yard, and though I went over and lopped several huge trunk vines, it didn't make a dent in it!
I'm going to tell them Freewill's advice about "ivy blocker" before they tackle it for removal. The husband says he's planning to take out the whole section of fence.

They also said it was due to the clear cutting people are doing. There is nothing left that naturally fills up the space the poison ivy fights for to grow.
