RIP doesn't seem quite appropriate for Ali. If there's an afterlife I'm sure he's there stirring things up, in a good way. Love him or hate him you couldn't ignore him. Probably for a long period the most recognized face in the world. In a year of significant deaths his is the biggest. Remember him lighting the flame at the Olympics, very moving. The world just lost a legend

I hadn't realized that he was from Kentucky, the state I had moved to in 2007. He was part of the opening ceremonies at the 2010 World Equestrian Games that I was volunteering at & got to see him there. He was more down to earth in person than he was trying to put on his image.

I hadn't heard about his death until you posted this. He suffered from Parkinson's for almost 30 years. Kinda surprised he lived this long.

I removed it simply because you removed it to avoid any problems.

Hi eskie, I guess you can live with parkinsons for a long time. Michael j Fox has had it for quite awhile too. I wonder if he was maybe bigger in the UK than in the US.

Sorry, I jumped to the conclusion that you'd got a mod to modify my thread too, whereas you were referring to your thread and I was a bit taken aback. My fault. OK gloves off haha.

He called Joe Frazier an Uncle Tom and a gorilla, which is a racist term when referring to black people. Joe Frazier never seemed to get over that, at least not in the interviews that I have seen. Everyone's saying Muhammad Ali was a great person, yet can he really be seen as a social progressive when he said things like that?

I would say the answer to your question IT is "yes" he can be all that and more to a lot of folks.

I think that Ali was just as human as the rest of us and made mistakes along the way. No one is perfect eh?
Thanks for this!

I never called a black person a gorilla. That's a shocking thing to say.

Ali also blamed all the bad in black people on white people. He said this.

He was against integration. Guess who else is against integration? The KKK.

He also blamed white people for homosexuality.

Some guy. This is our hero now?

Wow.

Well back to our regularly scheduled program - my t once encountered him in an airport bathroom. No toe tapping was involved, just a handshake at the sinks.

I think a lot of things he said were all about showmanship & to get his name made known. The more attention he got & the more attention his fights got, the more money he would make.

Kids will say things they really don't mean just to get attention. This was sort of a big kid game IMO.

Everyone has their definition of what a hero is to them. I do not see a hero....just another person who has lived & died & people know him for what he did

Okay IT, I get your point but I challenge you to find something good about the man. That's what we want to remember him for, the good stuff. We can forgive the bad stuff in folks if we really want to.

And, I think that eskie is right...he was a big blow hard to make as much noise as possible to get noticed. He may have done some things in the wrong way but it obviously worked...he was well noticed for both good and bad.
Thanks for this!
