Ack.

I'm terrible with home decorating stuff.

But, I was looking for sheets online, and found a gorgeous duvet cover that I just love... it's expensive, but I've got enough "cash back" saved up on my credit card to cover it.

It's white/off-white (not sure from the pic) with gray stripes.

How can I tell if it will match my room, and my sheets? Should I just assume that some part of my brain is smart enough to tell that it will look good in my room, since I'm so taken with the picture?

My room is pretty warm colored... peach walls, dark brown trim (where floor meets wall), pale yellow closet doors, light/medium wood (laminate) floors). My current comforter is white sateen cotton with shiny stripes. Oh, and silky purple curtains (!). Not sure how to describe the shade of purple, but they're pretty!

Maybe I can try to attach a pic of the duvet cover.... I guess I'm worried that it might be too "cool" colored, or that my sheets ("natural"/sand/almond-colored might look weird with it).

Thoughts? Advice? I normally wouldn't bother, but I had such an instant "LOVE!" reaction when I saw it!

Here's the pic... I tried to squish it a bit. It's the pillowcases and the striped comforter cover (not the solid gray sheet). Would this look weird in a warmer, peachy room? Would it look weird with almond/sand colored sheets?

And, isn't it pretty?

Decorating advice (bedroom, colors)?

Grey is a neutral color. I think it would look fine in your room. There is some peach color in the picture you posted. It goes nicely with the duvet and sheets.

Thanks Lizard Lady! That makes lots of sense... I'm not sure why I'm so nervous about this... but that's really reassuring!

And, you're right - I didn't even notice the peach in the picture!

I personally prefer darker brighter colors in my comforter sets. Mine is burgundy. But I do like when people choose lighter colors for themselves. It is pretty

I think you have a lot going on in that room.

Generally, a cool color doesn't play well with a warmer color. Peach is a warm color, as is a warm yellow.

Purple is a cool color, as is the gray in the duvet cover. I would not use a sand/almond sheet with it.

What is it in particular that you like about that duvet cover?

I'm in the process of trying to coordinate, too. It's not easy.

I agree with liz, white and grey are neutral. Grey also goes well with purple.

When the bed is made you will not really see the sheets. I think sheets could be any color

Hmm.... it's a lot to think about. Thanks.

Divine1966 - I used to have a darker comforter, but I'm in the deep south. Bug problems. I had a horrific experience (I have a pretty phobic response to bugs!) where something got on the bed, but I couldn't see it, b/c the comforter was so dark. Very scary for me... so after that, I ditched the darker (but so pretty!) comforter and went for a lighter one. If anything gets on the bed again (which it shouldn't, I have a better exterminator and an actual bed now... my box spring and mattress were on the floor previously) - I would be able to see it immediately! So, that's why the light colors for me!

Oh, and my sheets are usually visible, b/c the top folds over the comforter. So I see the top, and I'd use the pillowcases from the sheet set, so they'd be visible. But maybe it wouldn't matter. I'd transition towards sheets that work better with this if I bought it... the replacement sheets (for one set that just ripped) will be gray (just ordered them).

SophiesMom - you're right, there's a lot going on in the room! I'm definitely not a decorator! I realized the all the pictures are very different colors too... one (large one) matches well, with a lot of sunset colors... two small ones near the curtains are primarily green (!), and one near the door is a copy of a Van Gogh cafe scene, with a lot of very dark blue!

Oddly, the purple curtains seem to go really well with the peach walls. Maybe they have a lot of red undertones, rather than blue?

I'm not sure what it is that I love about the duvet cover... it just really spoke to me. The first version I saw actually had dark blue lines with lighter gray ones, but I knew that wouldn't work for my room... I keep thinking, the gray *might*? I don't usually have that instant reaction of "love it, want it, must get it!" for stuff - I don't usually buy a lot of stuff, unless I need it (i.e. I was looking b/c my old sheets ripped, so I needed to find a replacement).

Nammu, thanks! Do you think gray can be warmer/cooler depending on the undertone? I guess I worry it might be a cooler gray... when I tried to pull it out of the picture, with a color-picker tool, and add it to something that was close to the color of my sheets... it seemed to have a bit of icy/powder blue, but I don't see that when I just look at the picture!

Thanks... I'm still going back and forth on it... maybe it's not worth spending money on, since it's not something I really need at this point. I just love it so much more than any other duvet cover I've seen!

Look at the artwork on the wall of the adver. These appear to be the colours you described you already have. I think then you sre safe to go with the sheets. FYI however, that is a duvet cover i think not a comforter. Big big difference

Yes if it is a duvet you still need to put it over something like a comforter or blanket

Then let's make it work!!

Keep the first picture in your head when choosing accessories...

What I would suggest is to paint the closet doors though. Then you will be working with a gray/purple/peach palette.

Bring in the other colors with some pillows and get a cozy purple throw for the end of the bed.

I also just see stuff and want it. I have my eye on the most ridiculous light that goes with NOTHING in the room.....But I just have to have it...

Thanks, justafriend306 and divine1966... it's just the duvet cover. I have a comforter (white) that I can toss inside it for now, until I can get a nicer comforter.

Ooh SophiesMom - thanks! That first picture is dreamy! I hadn't thought about how you get orange/peachy colors and purple together in sunsets... lovely, thanks!

I'm still considering it... I think that it's a bit expensive, and doesn't feel like a "need". But, it's been a rough year, and I've *never* had a duvet cover in my life. It might be a nice way to treat myself.

if you can manage it it is a treat. It's not like this is a one time use object where the thril lasts a finite time. You will appreciate this purchase over and over and over again.

I do suggest you get a second duvet cover. One with the same colours but perhaps opposite - ike white on grey. This gives you opportunity to change things up on ocassion yet still stay with your scheme.

Consider an actual duvet for the insert. A duvet is more breathable and you won't feel 'stuffy'. Yes another expense but one that will last forever and be far more comfortable. IKEA and JYSK are excellent sources of linens.

Thanks Justafriend306! It would be a treat, though honestly, I'm still waffling... it's expensive, I just bought some nice new sheets, and it seems like there's a ton of stuff that I need/want. I'm OK with taking my time deciding though, and looking around online to see what else is out there... I guess, it's just that I've never had one before, so part of me thinks, "why spend the money, you've gotten along fine for a long time with no duvet cover!"

What's the difference between a comforter and a duvet? I thought they were the same, except... apparently... duvets have strings on them to tie inside the duvet cover?!?

But, that's on my list... I'm thinking about a lightweight wool comforter/duvet... b/c the cheap comforter I have (that I otherwise love) is filled with polyester, and is pretty hot. I'm in the south, so I definitely don't need anything that warm in the summer!

My new sheets should get her tomorrow! I can't wait to check them out!

A duvet is the insert, I believe (also called a filler sometimes). A duvet cover is self explanatory. I believe the reasoning behind it is that, in Europe, the duvet cover is used as the top sheet. (I never did that) The strings help keep everything where it's supposed to be, but not all duvets have them. The covers usually have buttons to close them.

It's less expensive to buy duvet covers and switch them out when you get bored, than it is to buy a comforter.

I would check Ikea for duvet inserts...

yes, the whole idea of the duvet cover is that it is the top sheet. You simply wash that instead of a comforter or blankets. A duvet is a tick(usually feather) filler.

Whatever you do, comforter or elsewise, make sure that what you use is NOT polyester. It is unable to breathe when inside the duvet cover.

Yes, make sure NOT to get polyester, I'm in the south too and saw the prettiest comforter and bought it without thinking to check the fibers. I do love the colors and designs but I have to take it off at night or I'm way too hot. Funny I always make sure the sheets are natural but I was fooled by a beautiful object.

Thanks guys... I do get it. I have a comforter right now (yes, polyester... too hot for the summer!) but not an actual, real "duvet".

It's funny that changing out the duvet cover is supposed to be a cheaper way to get different looks, b/c this cover is *much* more expensive than my current comforter! Easily 3x as expensive!

Thanks for all the advice! I'll post back if I end up getting it... I'm a bit slow with making decisions, and thinking about getting some more sheets instead at this point, though I do need to figure out something lighter for a blanket, I think.

Thanks!
