It's surprising that we can get significant earthquakes in the center of the USA.

Just after 7 this morning my apartment complex in central Kansas felt like it was swaying slightly. I reported it on the U.S. Geological Survey website, and waited for updates. A few minutes later they reported a 5.6 magnitude quake a few miles north of Pawnee, Oklahoma at 4.1 miles deep. Did anyone else feel it?

I am in south central Kansas. I woke up to my bed moving around, and my bedroom door popped open. This seems to happen more often as time goes.

I did hear that earthquakes *can* happen anywhere, and was very surprised to hear that! Dang things ~ I thought that I was safe from them out here in Mn. Sorry that you had one is Kansas, as it is you've got lots of tornadoes to deal with. Bum deal! Just remember: go to a doorway for safety in a quake. (((hugs)))

Now they're telling us, here in California, that standing in a doorway is not the safest thing to do. I was raised to believe it was. I think the experts nowadays are saying get under a desk or table. In my experience of the Loma Prieta earthquake (1989), I was not able to move at all during the 'quake. I'd try to take a step, but the rolling motion just threw me back.

Hopefully everyone is ok. Thoughts are with you. I know what a scare it can having been through them.

I can't imagine dealing with that. I'd be terrified.

The city I live in her in Kansas is in a precarious position regarding earthquakes. This is the salt capital, and has been mined extensively for well over a century. Much of the ground beneath this area has vast hollow caverns. Some of these have been used to store natural gas. Some years back there was a shift underground and the natural gas began leaking up in various places around town and starting blowing things up at random as it ignited. Some parts of town have been declared uninhabitable due to cave in and sinkholes. I can see one of those areas from my house. So I get little extra on alert about it when things start shaking.

Lots of people here in the topeka area felt it. My wife said our whole house was shaking. I was at work and didn't feel anything. It was weird because a couple people at work were standing in an area and didn't feel anything, but a few others were less than 50 feet away in another part of the building and felt it.
