Is it something we only learn in childhood?

I don't find much of it around me these days.

Aren't people using it when they write "IMHO"?

Yes, I think it is something that is taught and not just an instinctive way of being.

"Humility requires a sacrifice of pride and a paradigm switch away from self-centeredness. In a world that encourages self-indulgence and material wealth, humility may be challenging to acquire. Yet, the benefits including peace, wisdom, healthier relationships and the respect of others certainly outweighs the sacrifice." -- Elizabeth Harrell

Quite telling about society these days & where they place their values.

I think it is related to empathy. I think if you know and care about the world around you, You realize that we are all the same. It doesn't matter how much money, fame or looks you have. We all live, die, hurt , heal, love and get heartbroken. No one is immune. That to me, is humbling.

Humility comes from understanding and loving all people.

JMHO. lol

IMHO.<---see what I did there. Humility can come from many places besides understanding and loving all people. I do understand and love all people in a general way. I'm also highly aware of their design flaws and tendency towards psychological torture and brutality. It can be a pretty terrifying word if you get too many glimpses and encounters into the dark side of life. Some people are unimaginable. Sorry if I went off topic.

Back to topic. When pondering the meaning of humility, the phrase "never judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes" comes to mind for me. It's a reminder that we are who we are because of our experiences and not everyone gets a fair shake. Another phrase I heard recently that stuck with me is "some people were born on third base but always think they hit a triple....that would be the opposite of humility.
Thanks for this!

I think this is learned more in adulthood than when someone is too young to fully appreciate its importance. I agree though, doesn't seem too much of it left these days, like honor and respect for our fellow man. (I mean that in a general sense, not specifically men)
