The storm blasted Haiti, is stomping across the Bahamas and is headed for my state. I take a sensible approach to hurricanes/ tropical storms. I respect them. I take precautions as needed, but don't freak out about the storms. This one has scared the pants off me since it first developed and I don't know why.

I stopped and picked up some supplies on my way home from work tonight. Picked up some stuff in the yard when I got home. I still don't know if they are going to close work tomorrow and Friday. My boss gave us all permission to work form home the next two days if we want. If we are open tomorrow, I'm going in for a few hours, then come home early. I don't want to be on the road when the winds hit here late tomorrow.

I don't know why, but I'm really anxious about this one, cranky and edgy.

For those in the storm's path. Be safe. For others, please keep us in your thoughts.

HEy lizardlady,

I'm in northeast Florida and my office has closed for the next two days. I'm stocked up but I"m worried that I don't have enough water. I'm sure I'll be okay though...I hope...I hear you, I feel worried too.

You can fill up all your Tupperware with water, stick it in the freezer or fridge. You can also fill up plastic ziploc bags with ice or water and do the same.
Fill up the bathtubs, too, for washing dishes, flushing toilets, bathing.

The more I"m hearing about this storm, the more I'm thinking maybe I should head out in the morning to Clearwater. The problem is I will likely be driving through parts of the storm to get there.

Yeah, I woke up to worse predictions. And of course my drama mama uncle who isn't even in the path of the storm is texting me telling me that he'll be okay and they are preparing, doesn't even ask me how I'm doing. Ug, my family is so toxic, I really don't need this right now.

Hoping that everyone stays safe. Being near the coast as well, I know what the impact can be. Please let us know when you can if you are alright; y'all will be in my thoughts and take good care.

Remember that some times the predictors get it wrong ( ideally the storm downgrades or peters out, or it turns another direction) or they tell you the worse case scenario to make sure you are prepared. It is much better to be prepared than not to be but just do what you need to to take care of you, get what you need for supplies, and hunker down. However, believe that you will be ok no matter what happens as you CAN handle this, truly. Hang in there and it will pass soon. Take good care and will be thinking about you. Let us know how you are when you have a chance please.

Good to be cautious! My sister & dad are on the other coast of FL., thankfully.

My daughter's a flight attendant and so I'm a bit more alarmed about that. She said, "Mom, we're not going to fly into anything dangerous like that!"

What can I say, it's my inner worrying mother coming out! LOL

I'd rather not start a new thread about this, so I thought here would be appropriate...

So on your end of the coast, you get hurricanes.

In the central areas, you get twisters and tornadoes.

In California, we get earthquakes.

My brother, who is in Japan, get typhoons.

But to those who aren't in those areas, freak out about it.

Ever noticed that? Like, people on the east coast freak out when the west coast is affected by earthquakes, and people on the west coast are freaked out by tornadoes and hurricanes, but generally for me, living in California and have been through many earthquakes, I get excited to experience it and I'm not bothered by it at all. But then again, I've lived for 23 years and we haven't had a major earthquake yet. Just a little of little ones that shake the house a bit.

Stay safe LL and those in Florida!

Thanks for the good thoughts everyone.

I'm kind of in the central part of the state. We shouldn't get any hurricane strength winds in my area, but we could get tropical storm winds. The rating is based on sustained wind speeds. Can't remember what's what right now. Matthew currently has sustained 140 MPH winds. That's a Cat 4 storm. If this beast hits the coast we are in for serious damage.

Folks, if you are on the east coast, puh-leeze evacuate. This is one HUGE wicked storm. One of the feeder bands extends to Georgia fer gawd's sake! Folks further north in it's path please, please, please get out of its way!

Lark, I grew up in the midwest. Tornadoes scare me. We get the nasty things here too. The property my husband I used to rent near here was called "tornado alley" by the locals. We had FIVE tornadoes go through the property. I watched one rip the roof off my barn. Gotta say the idea of an earthquake scares the poo out of me too. I have friends who lived through the La Preada (sp?) back in the day. Mom Nature is no one to fool with.

The agency I work for decided to give us the day off tomorrow. I left work a bit early today to finish picking up stuff outside. Not much to pick up though. Most stuff was still put up from the storm Labor Day weekend. On a positive note I have a beautiful bouquet of roses I clipped in the yard. I figured they would get battered by the storm so cut them and brought them in the house.

I have the news on in the background as I'm typing this. I just heard some idiot woman, who lives in the mandatory evacuation zone, say she's staying because it's "exciting." What do you want to bet that when the storm hits she's going to be screaming for first responders to come save her dumb arse!?!?

I'm not evacuating. I am in a city on the east coast but I'm not in a flood zone and I'm on relatively high ground. Biggest concern is loss of power and water and I've prepared for that for 5 days.
