Well gee, maybe you if you can't acknowledge California can be cold, you shouldn't be on this thread.

I hear you on this. There is nowhere in California that gets even close to as cold as New York is in the pit of January. When It was -12 out and I lived with my parents still, I'd have to go outside, be it in a blizzard, an ice storm, or below freezing. Sure I complained like hell about it but I did not own the place so why would I devise ways to circumvent my family's rules? If they said you have to go out then I went out no questions asked because it is the respectful thing to do.

Absolutely positively one thing I know is how hard it is to quit smoking. In fact, I can hardly talk about it because I think nonsmokers will think I am nuts. So I think you made a very valid point and I think I am going to take a vow to back away from the whole vaping thing because you are right about this I know nothing. I am not going to talk about nicotine in nightshades. Anyway, as a rule I don't eat nightshades since quitting smoking. Also....I believe eventually quitting was hard not because of just the nicotine but the 2,000 other chemicals that juiced up my Marboro smokes. No, I did not smoke American Spirits or roll ups. I wanted those 2,000 chemicals.

I absolutely positively agree with you that increased cigarette smoking has always been observed in those with MI. Always. What I am suggesting is that there should actually be rehab type programs, and administering of benzodiazapines, and whatever else they can find to help with quitting.

The truth is...there is very little support for those who want to quit and attempt to quit and I speak from personal experience. For me, putting together a successful quit program was like a part-time job.

Thanks. You convinced me to step back from the vaping question because I have absolutely no firsthand personal experience with it.

PS I hardly use my cell phone. I have an old cell phone and it is ridiculous that I barely use. Never liked the devices...just not something use a lot. I still would be too paranoid about exploding devices to use vaping. Doesn't interest me at all.

There is so much misinformation out there on vaping so I appreciate your honesty. It's so easy to be drawn in by flashy antivaping headlines and the information being passed as truth is laughable. Vaping really does help with reducing your cigarette intake. I went from 2.5 packs a day to 8 cigarettes a day. I know exactly what is in my ejuice as well. Propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavoring, and nicotine. That's it. Much better than the 2000 or so random toxins in a cigarette.

Okay, Apokolips. Beautifully written post. So there you go. To go from 2.5 packs to 8 cigs is an epic accomplishment. Congrats! That is truly a miracle. I could not cut down and had to quit cold turkey. And your point about knowing the ingredients in vape stuff is excellent. When I was on a quit site they listed the 2,000 chemicals in cigarettes and it was insane...like arsenic and metals and on and on very gruesome. Another point well taken.

Nic patches and gum were a big step for me and I used them. Thing is I went back to smoking, tearing off the patch, dozens of times. Finally, I was committed to quitting so they helped me. At one point I even considered I would just keep a patch on forever. Because I did not want to give up the nicotine. But then I read about nicotine, which is not harmless on its own. I also felt...that the patches were causing me to have intermittent cravings to smoke.

What I am saying is...there came a point I knew the nic had to go, and that is when I REALLY REALLY suffered. I could have used a big fat benzodiazepine prescription but I was refused. To this day on some days I still gobble handfuls of valerian, which is a herb with a similar effect as valium, only very light. I feel like quitting triggered a major depression. I had a lot of anxiety. Now I have mixed. I am still learning how to deal with stress (and I have a lot) two years after quitting smoking.

LL, I apologize if I came off harsh. Really sorry.

Vaping was only just starting up big with vape stores when I was quitting. I was trying to reduce the expense of smoking so didn't want to go to vaping.

I had no idea people were able to reduce smoking by such great amount by going to vaping. I learned something new today. But still I am going to keep my vow to not talk pro or con about vaping anymore. I just don't know enough.

Vaping is not at all cheaper than smoking. That said I am quite he bargain hunter so I don't break the bank. I too tried lozenges, patches, and gum. The lozenges and gum both made my ulcers worse and the patches made my night terrors worse. I can't personally see taking meds to quit smoking. I want less harmful chemicals in my body, not more. Everything in Vape juice is food grade and the carrier substances are found in more things than you think. Most nebulizers use propylene glycol to suspend the vaporized medication for inhalation and hospitals have begun pumping pg in the air to kill bacteria. Vegetable glycerin is in everything from food to cosmetics. The big science words tend to scare people a bit but once you realize you are probably ingesting them daily and they are used in just about everything, they lose that element of fear.

Haha. You are tempting me to reply, A, but then I will just put my foot in my mouth again. Have you tried quitting nicotine altogether? I know you are saying you don't want harmful substances in your body such as benzos, but truly unless you quit nicotine altogether you can't say how you will feel. I had panic attacks which is something I never had in my life. I mean like waking up thinking I was going to die. Okay. Good thing I couldn't get benzodiazepine cuz then would have to kick the benzos. What I did was I had a period where I drank grigio wine in the evening (something I never ordinarily did) but that and a lot of guided meditation stopped the panic attacks. Then I kicked the wine. Then cleaned up my diet. It is all progressive. I do not know anything about vaping nicotine so I am not going to address it. I think the patches and gum were awful but what can I say, they were providing nicotine. Yes, stomach aches, mouth sores. Yuk. Done. I have to jump off this thread because you may convince me to vape. Haha. That would be bad with two years nic and smoke free coming up for me in February. I will admit I still miss nicotine when I start talking a lot about smoking --- probably like someone could get nostalgic about heroin. But that does not mean one would really and truly go back. I knew an ex heroin addict. For awhile he would shoot water, because he was nostalgic. But finally that stopped. For me the patch was like that. After the patch was off I was done. I truly love breathing oxygen.

I hope all goes well for everyone. Really and truly.

I did try quitting and the withdrawal sent me into a severe manic state bordering on psychosis. So yeah I have tried quitting and it's just not a good idea for my mental state. If you would like to Vape and don't want nicotine, most juice companies sell 0 nicotine juices. I actually go between 0 and 3 mg nicotine myself.

It's less about the weather honestly and more about showing respect to your family that allows you to live with them.

No. No. I don't want to vape. I am curious about vaping and this is an interesting conversation but I don't want anything in my lungs except oxygen. But, you know, I have an addictive personality, so sure, my addictive mind is thinking hmmm, vaping sounds interesting but my logical mind is saying, get off this thread! My addictive mind likes substances but I don't permit them. Anyway, my whole addiction was around nicotine so I am sure vaping without nicotine would strike me as like drinking non-alcoholic beer. Like...why?

Also, it may be irrational but I have a fear about those devices exploding. I am not an early adopter. I didn't use a microwave until about 4 years ago. I lived with microwaves in the house for years and never used them. Explosion fears. Haha.

You see, I do understand about quitting nicotine. I totally believe it put you into a manic state bordering on psychosis. This is something nonsmokers could never understand. I don't even think the experts understand. I was on a quit smoking site for a year. Of all the people I quit with at the same time...after a year I was the only one still not smoking. Of about a dozen people everyone went back to smoking. Many of them had tried dozens of times. One girl with MI went for 9 months. That was an accomplishment.

The long term effects of vaping are not yet known. However, cutting down from 2.5 packs to 8 cigs...that's amazing. So you are okay and it is also good that LL is smoking less.

What this thread is really about is that smoking and vaping are becoming less socially acceptable...and those who smoke and vape have to put up with a lot of stress from feeling judged. I am sorry to say that if I meet someone I would like as a friend and I find out they smoke I then distance myself. I might be the extreme. It is sad. I hope to increase my compassion.

Take care, A,

That's what works for you and that's great. Being nicotine free is not worth being institutionalized for me and that would be the end result. To each his own.

Wow. Then for you I am glad vaping exists. It sounds like you are keeping up with all the research. I think nicotine must have an effect on the brain that is very, very complicated. I am sure in time they will find an antidote...something that affects the brain without it being addictive. But then, psych meds are also kind of addictive. You also vape at a very low dosage of nicotine. I can say without a doubt that not having nicotine has changed my personality. On another thread I asked if people thought that quitting smoking could bring on a major depression. I think other posters thought I was a bit crazy and they said absolutely not. But, you know...who is to say? I personally think that nicotine acted like an antidepressant for me. And that is for years. So of course people think you quit, great, but really there are changes such as the depression but I am continuing to be progressive. A, never say never. If now isn't the time and you keep the dosage of nicotine low...you are actively trying, right? So good for you. Last thing we need on PC is criticism and being judged, right?

Nicotine seems to be one of the few substances that manages to kill my anxiety without sedating me into a zombie with no personality. I am trying to keep my levels low enough to minimize side effects and without losing its effectiveness. I don't really worry too much about my lungs at this point seeing as how I caught mrsa in my lungs so they aren't exactly in the best shape anyway. I'd rather be somewhat sane than be able to run a marathon anyway.

Nicotine kind of rocks in what it can do. I had no idea that for years nicotine was doing for me exactly what you describe. It managed to quell my anxiety and I guess depression while keeping me alert. Of course it controlled my appetite. I don't like how central food has become since quitting. It's boring. Nicotine gave me a relaxed buzz. Since quitting I have been experimenting with herbals. I combine valerian, rhodiola, and passionflower to quell anxiety without fatigue. I mess around with herbs a lot.

Mrsa in the lungs???

Terrible.

Saw on other thread you are reptile rescuer. That is so cool.

Sorry LL for kidnapping your thread.

I think LL should be allowed to vape in the garage. End of story.

She told you that she doesn't want you vaping in the house. You want to do it anyway. That shows a lack of respect. If you want to smoke and Vape inside, find your own place. If not you have to follow the rules of the house you live in. This is not me being rude this is the reality of the situation.

I think I forgot to mention the part of smoking in the garage...or people missed it over the side conversations. I don't know which. Is the other vaping thread not enough? Maybe you should start your own. I don't know. You might as well keep talking over me until the thread is closed, because no one seems to understand my question making grand assumptions of things I didn't say and they might as well just scratch their heads over the fact that Californians can in fact be cold when it is cold outside.

So much for wanting to respect my mom's wishes by asking her permission to let me smoke in the garage where it's warm and dry rather than in the unusual cold and rainy California weather that happens every year during the cold and rainy season.
