My fiance and I have decided to get our cat a "friend". She has always been playful and wants to play in the middle of the night 3am to be exact... Anyhow, we've decided that she might not bother us as much if we get her someone to be with during the day. We've decided to get a kitten so she won't be as threatened. I'd appreciate any stories/suggestions on introducing a new cat into the house hold. P.S. Our cat is a little over 2 years old. Thanks!

p.p.s. I've already done some research, and I know about keeping them in separate rooms for a while, I'm interested to hear your personal experience with introducing cats good and bad.

You know it might work out really well. I've never had experience with cat so I have no idea except to know they are very independent. Maybe your cat's mothering instincts will come into play.
Hope everything goes well.
Good luck

I've introduced new kitties to my exisiting "kitter katter" tribe... but it has always been a kitty to older cats.. In the beiginning.. they kinda like to have their own litter box... somehow.. that seems to be a "thing"...

I've always brought the new kitty out and held it.. and the older kitty katters come out and start "checking" the newbie out.. while she is safe...my experience has been that they start "gooming" the new kitty.. licking and such...and then it is just "ok"... haven't really had a "rejection"....

and yes.. I admit to 4 kitty katters.. but.. that was a longtime ago.. alllergic now.. New kitty for my cat

When I brought a new cat into the family we would put her in a room while the others roamed to rest of the apartment. They got their first into from under a door.
Then we would switch them out; the new cat would roam while the others stayed in a room.

This seemed to work out pretty well. Within a day or so everyone had the run of the place.

I went to the store tonight and bought new stuff for the kitty, we're going to go get it tommorow...hopefully. I got some kitten food, dishes a small litter box and a bed! I'm just hoping we'll find one that we click with. The "literature" says to take 2 weeks before you actually introduce the cats... think we could do it sooner than that?

I have a mixed persian cat almost 3 years now and all my life I grew up with pets around the house.

Our current "kitty" is already spayed and we want to get another female cat. Ours is a Siamese/Tabby mix.

Well we picked out a cute little tabby today and brought her home. When we were taking her out of the box our current cat hissed... she's NEVER hissed until now. Anyhow, she has her own room with everything she needs. She smelled a bit like poo so I gave her a little bath. Well I was sitting on my couch and my old cat come up to me and I thought she was going to give me some lovin', instead she hissed at me! Which really upsets me... stupidly I cried. *sigh* I hope this works out....

thanks freewill! Things are going a bit better, we've moved thier food bowls by the door. This morning when I came out she hissed, but I gave her some food and she let me pet her while she was eating. Later this afternoon my fiance and I played with the little kitten and afterwards we went and pet the old cat a bunch, hoping she'd get used to having the new scent. She didn't hiss this time!

Now... we need a name! I'm thinking that I'll post a picture of her and see if anyone here can think of a good name!

Very cute. We have 4 cats and a Yorkie I got my wife for Valentines day this year. All of ours (cats that is) are strays that we brought in. I try to blame that on my wife, but it's not true. The first showed up outside our old home and was cornered by a neighborhood dog. I ran the dog off, and the kitten was so emaciated, that I couldn't leave it outside. Of course once I brought it inside to feed, it was adopted. The others are similar stories, except my wife gets the credit for those. Luckily, where we live now, there's no sign of strays. I was worried when I brought the Yorkie home, but she was so tiny, literally sat in the palm of my hand, that the cats never felt threatened and began bathing her almost immediately. They all get along great now, and are a lot of fun to watch chasing each other around the house.
