Senior management is looking for reasons to axe people. It's the general atmosphere that has people, me included, worried.

Liz, could you possibly look into other job opportunities? It's not easy to look around for a new job, I know, especially in these very uncertain times. But having at least begun looking around just in case things wind up not going well at your current job can be some sort of comfort. A back up plan if you will.

Staying at a job where you're constantly walking on eggshells for fear of the proverbial guillotine sounds super stressful. I don't know about you, but I'd sooner leave than to be in a state of perpetual fear. It's not good for anyone, let alone a person who already has enough on their plate with MI struggles.

I'm wishing you the best, and hope you come out of this for the better.

(((((Lizardlady))))) That's a very uncomfortable position to be in. I hope things work out for you.

Hm, all I can say is to come up with manageable goals to work on as well as reasons why you're a top employee that you can present to your boss if he decides to have "the talk".

Awww, I'm so sorry, my friend. That must make the company feel like it has a very uncertain and fearful atmosphere (

Thanks everyone.

I guess I should give some background info. I was too freaked to get into it the other night.

I work for a counseling agency. It used to be a great place to work. When management said they had an "open door" policy they meant it. I had more than one chat with the CEO in the halls of the corporate office. Now, it's a whole different ballgame. Used to be that senior management came from a counseling background. Current senior management comes from a business background. Everything is about numbers. Helping clients has taken a backseat, if it's even still in the car.

One of the VPs keeps a stack of cardboard boxes in his office so he can hand people a box to pack their stuff when he calls them in to fire them. They just hired a person who works directly under him. She is going around "observing" everyone. Consensus is that they are looking for positions to cut.

Many of us work in the field so we are not exposed to the negative environment on a daily basis. My understanding is that at least one person a day has an emotional meltdown at the corporate office. Long term employees at that location are quitting like crazy.

I did make a list of my strengths that benefit the company. I plan to mention them when the person comes to "observe" me. I also plan to point out that the school loves me so much they gave me an office, telephone and internet access at no charge to the company. I'm the most productive member of my program's staff. I plan to point that out too. Told my boss yesterday that I plan to be a combination of Mr. Rogers and Sgt. Schultz when the person observes me. "It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood (company)" and
"I see nothing." Apparently the observer is also looking for dirt on people.

I'm three years from being able to retire. The idea of starting over someplace new is not a pleasant thought. Am going to update my resume and start looking at what's out there though.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention this. I've told people at the school where I'm based about what's going on so they can sing my praises when the observer comes.

I'm less freaked since I came up with a game plan. Still worried, but am telling myself to focus on what I have control over and try to let go of the rest.
