It has long been a burning question in my mind since my mother introduced me to housework.

Is it better to vacuum the floors first or dust first? It would seem that her reasoning was that if you vacuumed last then the it would cover the objects with dust again.

My mother's logic was dust first, so that any dust that was stirred up and landed on the floor would get picked up by the vacuum. Same with counters in the kitchen, then sweeping the floor, then mopping.

Dust first. Knock it on the floor, and then vacuum.

Dust first! If you're feeling lazy just vacuum and skip the dusting

Might have to do something radical and dust first today. Have to say that today I am feeling lazy and would rather skip both but the agent is coming through on Tuesday for an inspection and it does need doing.

Now need to pick good music for said dusting.

Ugh, living on the farm with 3 white fluffy dogs that shed all over the place I would be dusting & vacuuming continually & have no time for mowing, gardening of all the other repairs that keep hitting me so most of the time I don't vacuum or dust until it gets so bad I can't stand it any more....& I agree with the dust stuff on the floor then vaccume. Then if I stir up dust with the vaccume I do a quick swipe & then leave it for another 6 months

I'm not sure... I see it both ways. Vacuums don't just suck up dust, they spread it. Look at the vacuum part that's on the floor and the hose (if you use it). There will be dust on the ends when you're done, because while dust is drawn to the vacuum, some dust doesn't get all the way to the vacuum action, especially when you turn it off. Then there's dust floating in the air. Dust gets back on tables and such, although I'm not saying it's as much as if you did it in the reverse.

Today I dusted and then vacuumed. It made more sense especially when I had wiped a venetian blind down. (Along with the sound of Queen blasting 'another one bites the dust' in the background ). After doing that there was a fair mess on the carpet. Then I washed the floor.

Last place I was in the floor was crunchy and the dust was so thick I was embarrassed when I had a visitor which was a rare event. Spiders bit me while I slept. Moving to another place was a great way to clean things up and get rid of 'stuff'. Maintaining it now is not such a mountain to climb when I keep on top of it.

The owner was here today fixing the tap I broke on Wednesday. The estate agent will be here for an inspection this coming Tuesday. The front room has five floor to ceiling windows and a another one half of their size above the kitchen sink. I have found that I actually like not tripping over things dropped on the floor be myself or having things dumped on the bed and not being able to get into the bed. Furbabies not included.

I know a lady who lives on a farm Eskie. She is a grandmother, large family, baby sits, in involved in many projects in the community. She also has chooks and dogs and has a very full life. Like you she has a heart of gold and does many things for others. Hearts of gold are to be valued.

Maybe if I owned this place I wouldn't be this clean. I wouldn't have the sense of being evicted over my head.

May we all get 2nd chances... Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, or however many we need to get to happiness.

I really don't think it matters as much these days with better vacuums. I dust first.
Thanks for this!

Well I don't have carpet so no vacuuming here...but I always dust/wipe down before I sweep because like someone else said, if anything falls on the floor the vacuum /broom will get it.
Thanks for this!

I always work from top to bottom, maybe something left over from my days as
a tradesman but it makes sense to me to dust first and the last thing done would
be the vacuuming.

i hate dusting. i usually just vacuum i figure gravity will bring the dust to the floor.
sometimes I vacuum dust from surfaces with the attachment on the vacuum cleaner.

I agree it seems better to dust first. However, after working all day (six days per week), I can see and feel dirt on the floor. Dusting is just not a priority. I dont usually get to it unless I tip over a house plant.

I really don't think it matters if you have good vacuums. Good (expensive) vacuum wouldn't be spreading dust everywhere.
