Hello, my doctor told me I need ulnar nerve surgery on my arm. That means my left arm may be immobile for a few days. I’m concerned because I don’t have anybody around and I want to take care of myself. Also I try to keep active because I’m getting old and I’m concerned this is going to keep me from staying fit. I dread anything medical because I’m alone and getting older. Will I be okay???

The doctor knows I’ll be alone and he didn’t seem too concerned about it. It’s arm surgery so I don’t know if having somebody around is generally required. I was trying to find out if anybody was in a similar situation and found it okay.... my left arm should be iffy for use for a few days anyway. Thanks

Is this day surgery? Are you to be considered an out-patient?
Consider that if so, this is a routine procedure and that if they are releasing you immediately after it they are judging you to be capable of recovering on your own. With this said however, I am a bit shocked that they wouldn't ask what your situation will be immediately following. Understand that you wouldn't be the only person to go through this though. As for what you can do, you should arrange to have a ride and have that person stick around for a few hours until the surgical recovery is over - especially if you are being put under. |

You're overreacting. It's not a big deal. Your arm will be tender, maybe in a sling, and that's it. You will be completely fine on your own.

Of course it does I just checked google and I see people's arms split open...gross, thanks for making me check, I really didn't need to see that.
It's a minor surgery. Don't trust what you see online, because clearly your arm will just be in stitches by the time you wake up and not split open. Eww...just ew. I cannot unsee that now. |

One site on google said you wont be able to drive for 2 or 3 weeks. I would think you could maintain your fitness with walking.
