I used to work for superior court. Probate, Mental Health, and Name Change court were the same group of judges. My coworker’s daughter had her name changed to Indiana Jones.

I wouldn’t have known about it, but she called me from a poster I had hung by the court elevator buttons because I pick up a tiny, crying kitten on the freeway bridge on the way to work. I’m afraid someone had tried to throw it off the bridge. There was no way it could have gotten there, and it was barely old enough to stop nursing. She adopted it.

Her mom would give me updates about the cat. She promised me it had a good life.

I had a classmate in middle school whose last name was Hymen

There's a high school named Analy where I live.

I always thought Humphrey was one of the weirdest names I've ever heard.

African Americans often give their children unique names because they associate traditional Anglo names with slave names. That doesn't mean that some of these names don't come with a social cost, though.

At least none of you have had to deal with the name "Shithead", pronounced "Sheh-theed". It's a real name, believe it or not.

On the one side, I can see where someone might say, "Yeah, but it was those very Anglos who fought for their freedom," as if that automatically means they must name them something more Anglo-sounding. While not racist, per se, that is still very insensitive. You can't systematically suppress a people, and then demand that they take inspiration for names by the very system that oppressed them.

On the other hand, I can understand their position of wanting to separate themselves from the antebellum culture of systemic racism spawned by a certain political party that has spent the large majority of its existence trying to suppress blacks and minorities and promote racial inequality by passing laws like poll taxes and Jim Crow laws designed to keep them from voting or exercising constitutional rights.

But naming your son Diabolique? Really? He's pure evil, huh? That's a negatory. lol Unless your name is Frank Zappa, naming your son Dweezil or your daughter Moon-Unit or something even weirder probably isn't going to get them into Rhodes. There is a lot of power in a name, and I read a report once where it correlated names to financial success, and ranked them. I think there does have to be a balance between wanting to name your child something unique, and wanting to name them something that will help them succeed later in life.

Interestingly enough, it became a big enough problem that Denmark put a stop to it because names were getting a little too creative...I think Native Americans had the right of it, though. A name was given to a child upon entering adulthood that was something for them to aspire to, not reflect who they are currently, but who they will grow to be.

one family I knew were so worried about their kids mixing with the wrong crowd or being hurt, they named them "dogbreath", and "smelly".

they figured with those names, no one would want to hang out with them, their for, keeping them safe

since then, both have changed their names (thankfully)

the boy to charles, and the girl to britany

but still. poor kids

Actually, Jethro Tull was the inventor of the seed drill...Why he named his group after him is another story...

I have also known people called orlando, washington, spider, and cruise- oh and " bo bo", apparently named after what their first child called a dog

so.. share your unusual names here

Funny story-my mom used to talk about her gynecologist, “Dr. Finger.” (My God)

She finally made the kimchee he was bugging her for, and made me deliver it.

When I got there, the sign in the door said, Dr. Finkel. I. Wanted. To. Die.

I went in, dropped it off, and the receptionist smiled a little too hard.

I went home and said, “Mom, it’s Dr. Finkel, not Dr. Finger!!”

She said, “Yeah, Dr. Finger.” She couldn’t say Finkel. It’s her accent.
Thanks for this!

Had an elderly friend who nick name was Bo Bo...her real name was Opal. Got to know her & her sisters as she was the roommate to my elderly friend in tbe nursing home I always visited. It was interesting because everyone in the family had those different nick names. Nick names that people go by aren't usually their legal names

Honestly after having the name Debbie & having 4 other Debbie's in my class growing up in school, I promised myself I would be a lot more original in naming my kid. I wanted a name that was beautiful yet different....so I named our daughter Chandra. The nick names for it were Chandie or the one my parents neughbor from Brazil gave her was Chanzie. Her full name (first & middle) m3ant "brighter than a shining star"

Unusual enough yet still a pretty name. That was my goal.

Lol nsming horses is sort if how some people name their kids.

I named my foal Itssabout Tyme (barn name Izzy). She got that name because the vet came out to check my mare & every time (3 times) he said 5 more weeks....when I got tge call my mare had her foal my first comment was "It's about Time" & everyone I told made the same comment so that became her name. For horses its more ik than with people
