I used to work at a grocery store as a bagger. I quit 3.5 years ago. I’ve gone in at least once a week since quitting. There are still some people I know. I left on good terms. This one cashier kind of annoys me. She still expects me to bag my own groceries as if I still work there. She doesn’t say anything. She just kind of leaves my stuff there. She doesn’t say anything and I don’t say anything. Then it’s just kind of obvious she wants me to bag my own stuff. So I do because I don’t want to be rude.
I’m not trying to sound entitled or anything, but none of the other cashiers do this. I just don’t want to be made out to feel like I still work there when I don’t.

if you are in there as a paying customer then she is definitely in the wrong

This is a pet peeve of mine. I work for a gas station that is part of a larger store. IF I go in the main store to go shopping no one will help me. They just tell me to find it myself or go in the back to look for it. And it really irritates me because I'm off the clock and I shouldn't be doing their darn job for them when I'm not being paid!
I don't think you are being a jerk at all. In fact you're a better person than me because I would tell her I'm not being paid to bag groceries!

Oh no, she's definitely in the wrong. Maybe if it was only a couple of weeks since you left, you could say she'd forgotten

I would simply ask...aren’t you going to bag those? You don’t need to put up with it.

Maybe you can be honest and muster up some humor about it next time saying with a chuckle, “You know I haven’t been an employee here for years, you can bag my groceries for me now. I was too polite to say anything before.”

I guess in america it's pretty much the rule that the cashier or bagger packs the groceries so yep she should do it but if you see her regularly and are on good terms i wouldn't let it bug you. Just laugh and say ' hey, i shouldn't be doing this anymore'.
In the uk it's the opposite. Very rarely do you get your shopping bagged for you. normally i put it back in the trolley and sort it our after otherwise things get squashed, eggs broken, etc etc if you pack it without thinking. Also supermarkets must charge for bags so , i think, most people bring their own bags. I think it has cut the number of bags issued by about 80%. When you see plastic bags on beaches or in animals stomachs or animals trapped in bags, cans or boxes something has to be done. Plastics and microplastics are a big problem environmentally. Does every other customer's purchase get bagged?

That cashier works the express checkout lane. The express lane has no bagger. It’s the cashiers responsibility to bag the customers groceries. When I worked there the cashiers hated that lane for that reason.

Yes, but... what I mean is are you the ONLY PERSON she is not packing for? If this is the case then you absolutely have reason to complain to her superiors. I just don't want to be jumping to conclusions here where that is not warranted.

I mean I don’t really know since I leave the store when I’m done shopping. There’s not usually a line behind me. I shop on Sunday mornings when the store is empty. I am confused by your question. Why would I wait around and see if she bags anyone else’s groceries?

I think you miss the point.
You declared in your original post you accused your former coworker of having a personal bias against you. You described this as a case of harassment. I am merely asking you to consider if this conclusion is in fact warranted. For, if this behaviour was happening to other individuals then it couldn't be a case. |

First of all, I never said she was harassing me.
And you are right I am most definitely missing the point of your posts.

What I was saying was that I was raising the possibility you might be jumping to the wrong conclusion. And the way I have read and re-read your opening post is that you feel some sense of being targeted. Apparently I am completely off base.

I think since she is the employee If the line she is on does not have an employee bagging the groceries then it’s her job to bag the groceries. If you do not want to bag them then she should be doing her job and bagging them. If she just leaves them there expecting you to bag them you can just simply say “Would you please bag the groceries?”.
It isn’t that hard and there is nothing to figure out. She’s an employee-you are not and if you don’t wish to bag your groceries then she needs to bag them. I bag my own whenever I go to the store. But that is my choice because I am picky about the way they are bagged. I however am not obligated nor is it my job to bag them. And if I don’t feel like bagging for whatever reason then I leave my groceries there for the employee to do so. Just tell the girl to bag your groceries. |

I get it.
Yes. It’s not hard to bag my own groceries.

No it’s not hard. But if you don’t want to bag your own then she should bag them.

Can you go to a different lane and just avoid her? This is just my thinking but I would not push the issue. She is being rude and disrespectful but something inside her is set off when you are in her lane. That behavior could easily have nothing to do with you; it might be something unresolved in her. Of course, that doesn't excuse her rudeness. If it were me, I would leave her alone.

Yeah I guess it makes sense for me to just avoid her altogether. I don’t think she’s jealous of me. She’s a lot older then me. Do people in their 70’s get jealous of people in their 20’s?

Everything boils down to a person's mindset. One person might be jealous while another isn't. It's an individual thing.

I had another issue at this same grocery store on Sunday with a couple diffrent cashiers I used to know. And I have come to the conclusion that I have to avoid this store all together. I am just having too many problems years after quitting. There is another one a few miles down the road.
