I have given this great thought this year.

I live in a lower socio-economic neighbourhood and I would like to get something more useful than candy. Perhaps gift certificates to McDonalds for food? Pencils and other sorts of supplies? I know it will seem a drag to the kids at the time but these items may end up being used in the long-run.

In years past I have handed out potato chips. They seem to go over well.

Also, how many children do you plan for? We got a little more than 50 last year.

most years when children come to me, I don't let them in.

honestly I don't have time for 50 little draculas turning up at my door going on about how scary they look, or saying " trick or treat"

in past years I've baught boxes of little chocolate bars and left them outside (so that when people come they just help themselves, I don't have to see them), but I stopped that when it became obviously clear that more of the chocolate was going in to my tummy, then the trick or treaters bags

Nestle's Crunch, Kit Kat, and Twix. In our old house, we only got about 10 kids because we lived in the sticks but we moved back to the city a few years ago and now we get slammed.

It's been several years since I've given out candy. When I did, I lived in an area where we planned for 300 kids. I would buy a bunch of variety bags, at that point. My current neighborhood is not a hot spot for this, tbh. My kids outgrew their desire last year. So, I really haven't had a chance to consider being a go to spot because it's still an adjustment for me. Granted, I realize many kids around me come from families that qualify for free lunch as district wide breakfast and lunch are mandated, I'd probably do the same as when I lived in that 300 area. Some families in that town give out big bars. Why should these kids not have access to the same? Many families here float between 3 areas that are the busiest as it's actually safer in numbers as dusk falls.

4 kinds of M&Ms, twix and 3 kinds of kit kats. We get about 50-75 kids but I buy enough candy for 100 just in case.

Got kit-kats, Peanutbutter cups, starburst and skittles oh right tootsie rolls. Get between 20-30 kids. I used to just hold the bowl out but they're so polite and only take one candy apiece so this year I'll hand out a handful at a time. Halloween is a time for kids to score big!

There are FOUR kinds of M&Ms? Why was I not informed of this? Dear Lord, what did I do to deserve such a bounty of plenty?
Thanks for this!

In my neighborhood when I was a child there was no night more exciting than Halloween. The streets were jammed with kids in costume, going door-to-door. My husband and I took our own kids t-or-t'ing, too. Then all the stupid urban myths about "poisoned candy" and other BS spread like wildfire. Not one of those silly myths are true, as it turns out. So now businesses on a busy street, or in my town, on Main Street, have a H'ween celebration, hand out candy and such. This is done during the too-warm afternoon. Ridiculous, and not a true Halloween, at all.

Anyway, there are almost no "real" after-dark trick-or-treaters anymore. I create a little shrine out side of my apartment...some cool lighting, decorations, and candy (Snickers, M&M's). Maybe a few kids will come, but mostly the candy will go to neighbors - which is fine.

I live in a town with a large Hispanic population, so Dia de los Muertos is celebrated - awesome. Marigolds everywhere.
Thanks for this!

I live in ritzy area so kids are obnoxiously demanding here. They want to dig through bags see what’s there and even ask why no such and such brand chocolate. Screw it. We won’t be home that evening hence won’t be passing out nothing. And yes I used double negative on purpose

Every year is different depending on my mood when shopping. This year I'm making homemade fudge. ll put 3 pieces in each bag along with a bag of cheeses and a container of juice. I usually have a bag of assorted candy and chocolate .Also a few bags of goodies for a few special kids lol. Yup I have favorites 😉

In our last home, there were hardly any trick or treaters. Ten at most. What bothers me is when the whole clan comes and the grandmas and the parents are expecting candy. BS.

In our new home, we're not expecting trick or treaters.

But in the last place I lived, my friends and I would go to the Mansion Ave, a street full of mansions that go all out on decorating. Sometimes they even do brief performances of scenes from Halloween movies like The Birds. It was pretty cool.

I live in the country & no kids go door to door because they would have to be driven from farm to farm & some drives are more than a mile back off the road. Not practical. The kids go to trunk or treats that the churches do around the area or they go to town whete the stores are open & hand out candy. Very different from where I lived for 54 years in housing tracts in the city

We don’t usually get that many kids since we live on an odd shaped block. So we get whatever we like since there will be so many leftovers. Usually snickers peanut butter.

I think we average about 7 kids a year.
