I'm still trying to understand the saying when "as you grow older, socks become more and more exciting". What's so special about adult socks??? I guess I'm not adult enough to understand this.

For me, the big sock gift of the 90s were toe-socks. I'd ask for them every year and then I'd proudly slide around the house in my toe-socks. I loved them. They made me feel soooo special. Every now and then I'll look for them, but I'm afraid they are out of style or they're not meant for adults. Fooey.

Last year my cat's foster mom got me a pair of "purrito" socks....a cat and a burrito put together...they're so cute.

I think that must mean because when you get older you get more boring? But nowadays with gender bender fashion and such, I think snarky ageisms like that are also out of fashion. There is really no age when one is considered old anymore -- at least not to those in charge of marketing!

Ooh...

I think it depends so much on the person, and how well you know their likes, preferences, and needs. I tend to be picky (in general), so if you randomly bought me regular day-to-day socks, I might not actually end up using them. My aunt did this years ago, she sent me a couple sets of what I suppose were dress socks (the confusion being that I don't own any socks like this, because I don't ever have a need for them, so I'm not sure if that's what they actually were - thin, very long, dark colors).

I kept them in my closet for a couple years, but never ended up wearing them (they'd look funny with sneakers! ) - so they eventually got donated to charity. (I might have taken one and put a tennis ball in it, to try to massage my back against a wall!)

My mom gave me some really nice alpaca socks, very thick and great to wear around the house in the winter... I loved them, but they ended up making my ankles itch (see, I really am difficult to buy for!). I didn't tell, but those also ended up donated to charity.

For some reason, she got me MORE of those - but in silly colors (I'm pretty boring with my color choices - can't go wrong with dark gray, black, or blue for me!) Like in baby blue/pink... it was confusing, but I thanked her, and donated them to charity. Literally nothing that I own is either of those colors and I'm not comfortable in them - they just felt way too bright for my personality and ankles!

Oddly, I bought my mom and sis socks this year for Christmas... but they're more "novelty" socks. I found them at the store and loved them (so soft!) - they're oversized, soft, with that "sherpa fleece" stuff inside and little grippy dots on the bottom, so you can wear them around the house without slipping on bare floors. Since they're visiting, I thought the socks might make a nice little gift to just wear in the evenings. I hope they like them, but they're too polite to tell me if they didn't.

It's hard. Or maybe, I just make things hard. There are socks I'd love to get... but you kind of have to know the person well enough to know what those are.

Luckily, it sounds like your son likes the socks you're getting him, you're picking out ones he can use, and clearly if he's asking for more, you're doing something right

I think there's also a weird issue some people have with "practical" gifts (versus things that you'd never buy for yourself) - where practical gifts can seem less... festive? gift-like?

The year after college, I had gotten a new car and job, and my boyfriend gave me a AAA membership for Christmas! I thought it was perfect and really thoughtful (I still have it, a billion years later!) - it helped me feel safer in the world, and showed that he cared and understood me! I mentioned it to someone who sarcastically remarked, "Oh, well THAT'S romantic!" - but to me, it was perfect.

Anyway, if your son likes socks... then he's happy, you're happy, and it's a win! So, good job!

I think an AAA membership is such an awesome gift. Maybe not glamorous...but my AAA is one of my most precious memberships. That was so cool of him!!!

Those fluffy socks with the grippy things on the bottom are bomb! I got one pair and ended up getting two more. Perfect choice for houseguests.

IDK about my son. He isn't picky about clothes but then I wouldn't buy him something like red socks or socks with reindeer on them. He is pretty conservative...so if I send him a dark sock with a modest stripe...that's pushing the envelope. He also has a very physical job and wears through clothes...so his clothes are practically disposable. I send him clothes because he is starting his own business and working hard and saving every cent. I usually send him guy boot lightweight boot socks and one very slightly crazy sock...which just means something with a bit of a stripe. He would not wear funny socks.

My son and I love to give one another practical gifts. But he is an awesome gifter. Last year he sent me a box from LUSH with bath bombs. I am a bath person. It was perfect and something I never would have purchased for myself. A real spoiler gift. I always send him lots of cookies and chocolate for his sweet tooth.

Socks and underwear are in completely different categories. I guess I was mainly reacting to the idea of underwear in a Christmas stocking, not socks. (I will buy my own underwear, thanks. )

Is anyone else mildly amused by the picture of socks in a stocking (which is basically a big sock)?

It's like socks... stuffed with more socks!

I know, right? I thought it was awesome too - since I tend to be stressed/anxious, I loved the idea of knowing that I could always get help and wouldn't end up stranded.

It was a really thoughtful gift!

They seem to have liked them. My sister even took a picture of her feet with them on! So, yay for that.

re: Your son, you guys sound like you're on the same wavelength with gifts. That's awesome! Very cool that you know him well enough to know what works, and what doesn't, for his style preferences. He's lucky to have you as his mom!

The bath bombs that he sent you... awesome! What a nice treat!

Pretty much everyone in my family is getting socks (along with other things) for Christmas. The baby needed church socks. My oldest nephew is getting funky socks with Pizza on them, the middle nephews are getting regular sporty socks because theirs are disgusting from playing football and everything else in them, my sis is getting mickey mouse socks, my bro-in-law is getting dress socks, my parents are getting socks in their stockings, and my niece is getting cotton socks which are harder to find then you might think but she needs them for a foot condition.
Thanks for this!
