RESCUE DAWN is a film by acclaimed director, Werner Herzog. I've watched many, many of his films (being a bit of a film buff). This film was just released on DVD and I looked forward to watching it. It is the story of Dieter Dengler who was shot down in Laos in l966, before much was known of the covert operations in the Vietnam War.
The problem with this film is that Herzog, director, portrays one of the American POW's as insane, cowardly, and an obstacle to the escape plan. There is a big discussion of this matter on IMDB right now, as well as websites set up by the family of Gene Debruin. The one Thai POW who also escaped and lived says Debruin was the "finest American he had ever known." This depiction of Debruin has caused great pain to his family. Herzog chose "artistic license" for the sake of drama over telling the truth about the actual events. Please keep this in mine, anyone here, who watches this film.
I have written the Dateline NBC, as well as Debruin's brother, Jerry, expressing my outrage at the way his brother was portrayed.
