Christmas Eve, and twelve of the clock.
‘Now they are all on their knees,’
An elder said as we sat in a flock
By the embers in hearthside ease.

We pictured the meek mild creatures where
They dwelt in their strawy pen,
Nor did it occur to one of us there
To doubt they were kneeling then.

So fair a fancy few would weave
In these years! Yet, I feel,
If someone said on Christmas Eve,
‘Come; see the oxen kneel,

‘In the lonely barton by yonder coomb
Our childhood used to know,’
I should go with him in the gloom,
Hoping it might be so.

Thomas Hardy

Robert Service, The Cremation of Sam McGee

Sounds morbid, doesn't it but it is actually quite humorous - and I had to recite all 34 lines of it in grade 4 English class. Here is but a few.....

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold, (the setting is in the Yukon gold rush)
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold,
The northern lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was the night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.

Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee.....

poor, poor, poor old Sam. I doesn't go well from that point on
