The title question "Approximately how many hours per day do you stare at a screen?" includes not only a computer screen, but also a smart phone, television, and movie screen (if you still go to the movies). If you're able/willing, can you breakdown the percentage of those hours by type of screen?

I don't wish for this to yield embarrassment/shame, pride, or any type of competition. I'll start.

I truly believe I am usually looking at some sort of screen generally from 7:30 am to soon before I got to bed, with the exception of sleeping hours, meals (we do have a family meal without screens), chores, most errand times, appointment, my new 2-hours per week volunteer job, driving times, and the too little bit of exercise and meditation I do with or without my spouse, self, and friends. Occasionally, I go out to lunch or an AA meeting.

Considering all of the above, exempting weekends, it equates to maybe 9 to 10 hours per day. In my case, the usual daily weekday breakdown is approximately:

* 1 to 2 hours of TV (I only really watch because my husband does)
* 5 to 7 hours on my laptop
* 1 to 3 hours on my smart phone

Note: I am not working a job at this time. Most of my computer time is to curb loneliness or for some form of stimulation. I make very few phone calls, and generally do not receive many. I don't usually answer my landline since most calls are unwanted robocalls or solicitors, despite being on a "Do not call" list.
Thanks for this!

I absolutely spend more time online than I should but I’m unable to work.

My husband typically has the tv running anytime he’s awake, he can be on his phone and it be on. I could go most days without turning it on except for maybe my local news and a few shows I enjoy.

I spend hours and hours here of Pc , roaming forums and keeping up with PM’s

Of course Facebook most all day long too, I pick a random topic and research it just because I can.

And I can spend hours and hours on my kindle reading.

I also have numerous chronic pain conditions so my being up and on the go a lot is just impossible.

I seldom go places other than to the grocery store, Pdoc , T appts and regular Doctors. I’m not a shopping person , besides I’m on disability I’m broke anyway.

I’ll probably rot out my eyeballs one day over it all , but for now? I’m okay with the time I spend.

So I’m usually staring as some screen when ever I’m awake beside when I’m making meals or watering my plants.

8/9 hours a day.

I don't often go out, so screens (especially computers), I rely on for entertainment

8 hours at work on a computer, another 2 to 3 watching TV (news in the morning, news and night, and then a fun show) and maybe an hour on my phone. So a total of 14 hours a day. Something like that.

I wanna know, are you guys staying home? I am too, and hardly meet anyone nowadays. I use my phone for around 7 hours. I dropped out of college and am trying hard to study. But I end up using my phone.

My iPad used to tell me how much screen time I had per day. I assume it’s similar now. I’m retired with limited income so screen time is my way of passing the time. I’d say between 5-8 hours a day.

I don’t even look at my iPad / iPhone when it tells me my average screen time for the week because I know it’ll be too much anyway.

It really depends on the day and what I'm focusing on. If it's a practice day like most days for the past week have been probably like 1-3. If I'm looking for music to cover or writing then it's more like 6-10. If I'm not doing anything for the band/pre-band times then it was probably like ~5. Kinda hard to tell because if I don't have a task to complete and I'm just passing time, I use the computer for maybe 5 minutes, do something for a bit, go back to the computer for 5 minutes, etc.

MuddyBoots, I didn't know you were in a band. What kind of music and what instrument(s) do you play?
Thanks for this!

Definitely a majority of my time. I use a computer at work, and a lot of my leisure time revolves around social media or just watching TV - they're cheap and accessible. Aside from sleep and meals about the only non-screen things I do are practice my harp and knit. Even most of my volunteer stuff is over zoom.

Compooters? It's a curious ADD brain's delight. 20 windows open at a time...Endless info within arm's reach but without the clutter. I'll admit. It takes up too much of my time and I don't even do social media. Thank Christ and all forthat!

What you said! AND I do social media. I am truly thankful to be so old that "online" wasn't a thing when I was growing up. I seriously think my developing brain would have spontaneously combusted!

Def. an inordinate amount of crap out there Fuzzy. Hard to avoid and difficult to ignore. A disgusted head-shake doesn't quite cover it anymore.

What's happening with the brains of the fresh generations who'll be stepping into a world so dependent on cyber will become evident not too far down the road. Social scientists are going to have their hands full studying the results. I just hope the negatives don't swamp the positives. Very crucial period in the history of our species I think. One step ahead and two steps back? I hope not.

We just formed like two weeks ago haha. Still trying to find our style. We've got some (jazzy transpositions of) 90's alt. rock covers going (right now I'm working on Disarm, such a pretty chord progression), a wee bit of punk/pop punk going, and (my personal fav) some blues-rock stuff. I do mostly keys, but am trying to get better at guitar and once I get the money I'm going to buy a bass guitar. When called for I'll play harmonica too. We're having a lot of difficulties getting started due to my health issues and also the FB page I made for it to attract vocalists got assaulted by someone who hates me though.

I just thought I would put this here. With the end of the year and Christmas soon upon us, I have decided to cut back social media to two visits a week for no more than 1 hour. Facebook and LinkedIn will miss my business I suppose
