My father said this to me, when he dropped me off at university, for first year. "You're going to go out and get drunk and do stupid things. Make sure you always have money for a cab ride home, never go home with a guy you met in a bar, and make sure no one has a camera." This of course was before everyone had cameras on their phones.

My Grandpa told me to live each day like your last, we don't live forever. Don't put off what you can do today.

"Some people really are just a$$holes" A close male friend who I respected more than anyone I ever knew, told me this when I was being gas lighted by an abusive partner, and I didn't realise it at the time. I got the message, and ended the relationship - I will be forever grateful.

Don't take it personally. It's not about you, it's about himself/herself.

My then-wife told me that I did not need my then-Chief, who was unethical and a jerk, in order to succeed. I finally quit and opened my own practice. I went on to have a very successful clinical and research career all by myself. She was right. I didn't need him. He was actually holding me back.
