Hi all,

I'm thinking about getting a Citizen watch for my 30th birthday.

I've read a lot of back and forth about buying a watch these days--most people own smartphones (I do) which can tell time and more, but with a watch you can check the time without obnoxiously pulling out a smartphone, like at school or work. A watch can give a good impression to a potential employer--that you are conscientious and punctual. It is also a good fashion statement and a thing you can pass down to generations. A watch is also a good milestone gift if you don't want a ring or a necklace but want something very nice to celebrate a milestone.

But, watches have downfalls. Most watches only tell time or have a stopwatch function. To me, smart watches are expensive but don't have the same wow factor as a nice watch and gives the impression you're overly dependent on technology. If you buy a very nice watch and get it wet, you ruin it. They can also get dinged and scratched easily, and they can run out of battery quickly.

So what do you think--do you own a watch and use it regularly? What do you like about your watch? What kind of watch do you have? Do you think a watch would be a nice present for myself for my 30th birthday?

I'm a "senior citizen". So I suppose it makes sense I'd own watches. (I don't own a smart phone.) I have one nice wristwatch. I also have two pocket watches. One runs on a battery. The other is a wind-up that belonged to my father & to his father before him. It's not a valuable pocket watch. But I still like it. I'm particularly fond of pocket watches in general. (My wife also has two wrist watches of her own.) If I wanted to collect something, pocket watches are likely what I'd collect. I used to wear mine all the time. However, nowadays, I rarely go anywhere. So I seldom have need of them. So, anyway, from my perspective, I'd have to say, yes, a watch would be a nice 30th birthday present for yourself.

Lark, I believe that would be a nice present for yourself.

When I was working I wore a watch during work hours. I had to due to the nature of the work I did. Taking my watch off at the end of the day helped me mentally know when I was off the clock.
Now that I'm not working I only wear a watch when I need to know what time it is.
As for kind of watch I wear/wore cheap ones from Wally World. I tend to be hard on watches. Don't want to spend a lot of money on one and trash it.

I don't use a smart phone or an iPhone or a ...etc. I was never a watch person, although my mom gave me a couple of really lovely watches in my life.

But here's what I think. I think that wearing a fine watch is really CLASSY. It doesn't go with the phone crowd, doesn't go with the cheapo-watch crowd - I'm not familiar with a Citizen watch, but whatever brand of watch you choose (and I say go for it, yes) make sure it says "Classic." My daughter's wedding ring is Tiffany and she loves clocks. The ring is something...some kind of clock image (it doesn't tell time, but it has Roman numerals on it), and it's stunning. Anyway, my point is, top-notch jewelry, classic jewelry - I wish I would have invested in a couple of pieces, myself. Really, all I want now is a really nice pair of pearl earrings, tear drop pearls.

Oh- okay, I looked at some Citizen watches. Yes, Lark! You will not regret owning a Citizen watch.

Hi, LL. I am a watch person. I used to sell watches, and so in the spirit of wanting to help you make up your mind, I'll offer some suggestions.

Head to the watch department of a better department store or jewelry store, and take your time making a selection. And, don't be afraid to ask the sales person lots of questions!

Better watches also usually have good quality crystals in them. That means they will be scratch resistant. They should be real stainless steel, which will not turn your wrist green. Check the backs---there's a lot of info on the backs of better watches. Some good watches also come with rubber straps, which can be a good option for active individuals. And do try them on. If you're going to commit to wearing a watch full-time, you want something that is comfortable for you.

Have fun shopping!

I love a nice watch. I have several. I spoilt myself. My favorite is a Guess watch that has butterflies on it. It also came with a selection of three differently colored bands. Currently I wear a fit bit that tells the time and so much more. It tell me heaps of things about my health. It is not ostentacious and even has a pretty floral watch that is the first thing you see. I look around now and see many people sporting these watches. A fit bit is not as expensive as an apple watch or smart phone.

Have fun choosing whatever you want to watch.

I have a $20 walmart casio watch that's waterproof. Has a stopwatch, timer, alarms, and some other things I don't know how to use yet. I haven't taken it off in months.

I used to wear a regular watch. I had a couple of favorite brands.

I have an Apple Watch now. I change bands to match my outfits or type of activity. No I don’t believe I give an impression of being dependent on technology because frankly no one cares. Lol I don’t wear things for any particular reason but liking it.

I feel it’s convenient because I have iPhone and it’s all connected to one another. So I have it for convenience. It’s more convenient at work than regular watch for number of reasons. It looks nice but unless I put some cool bands with it, it’s just plain black.

As about regular watches I don’t like the look of Citizen, I have tiny hands and skinny wrists so it wouldn’t look right. They seem bulky. I used to wear Ann Klein watches. My daughter likes Fossil. They make regular ones and smart ones. I do like how they look

I decided I will buy this Citizen watch:

Amazon.com

I think it's a stunning and beautiful watch and it will make me look very mature and grown up. Definitely a worthy milestone gift to myself.

I showed my mom and dad who both own Citizen watches and they were in love with it. I am too!

I have a couple of lovely watches, but I never wear them, because I hardly ever leave the house.......

I like watches.....Sadly though, I don't think many people wear them anymore due to smartphones.
