I think its because it starts the spending season that takes the stores out of the red (bad) and into the black (good - profitable), accounting-wise.
Thanks for this!

It is because stores sell more stuff on that day. They are in the black,( color of ink that used to be used to denote profits) instead of the red ( ink that denotes loss) it’s important to understand that Black Friday started in America as a business strategy in the 1950’s and exploded into a frenetic spending day. It took a few decades before it took over the holidays here. And online shopping and mass chaos of ridiculous hours that stores opened for Black Friday are sounding the death knoll.

Mass chaos lol no kidding.

I wanted new laptop and my husband ordered one from Best Buy for my holiday gift. Of course using Black Friday price! We went to pick it up yesterday, quite late in the evening. There were probably 50 people in line all through the store. I guess they had good deals. I saw some huge TVs on sale. We just picked laptop up and left in a hurry. We were afraid to fall into shopping frenzy and start spending lol Best Buy does have good Black Friday deals. One year we bought new kindles for $29 a piece

It's since made its way to Europe, too. In many places here in CZ they are having "Black Friday Sales", and they write those words in English. If written in Czech, it would more denote something akin to Friday the 13th. A bad day.

Christmas is not nearly as commercialized in CZ as it is in the US, but it's much more so than in the past.

Oh that’s interesting soupe! I had thought Europe was less commercialized. Though I did hear England had a version of Black Friday now.

Black Friday sales have also made it here, although they are more for online purchases. Most are promoted as Black Friday in English, not viernes negro.
Thanks for this!

Lol....accounting practices of "black" meaning profit & "red" meaning debt if common all over the world where credit is used. Yes, the sales on "black friday" do bring many businesses back into the "profit/black" side of their accounting books. Will see how it works this year in the current world economy. I sure wasn't out shopping to find out
