Ah, jeeze Roz,
Being away from home is terrible.
I spent a year in Japan and couldn't wait to get home.
Even now, I have spent 22 years away from home, visited a few times but, it is 1260 miles away. I live in Minnesota, home is in New Jersey. I'm land locked here, no oceans, no cheese steak sandwiches, no hoagies, no tastykake,
no pretzels, no water ice, it is just a lot of hotdish and nasy lutefisk.
I know how you feel.

I've lived in Ontario for a bit and travel often, and I was born in England, but my heart will always be in Québec. Not seeing French on roadsigns makes me feel homesick a little. Missing Yankee culture ...sorry!!!

I understand how you feel.
For me it is always odd to travel outside of the south, nobody knows how to make sweet tea outside of the south I swear!! When I go to D.C. and get sweet tea it is so horrible and bitter!! I love big cities but at the same time I always get so home sick for forests and cow pastures. And I get so sad when I can't see the stars at night.

Maybe you could start doing things that help bring some American culture into your day to day life?

I have a friend who moved here from LA for a few years and she held her own Thanksgiving parties. She made food that isn't all that common in the UK, like pumpkin pie, and it was really well received and a huge success. It helped to make her feel less homesick. Could you do anything like that maybe?

i live over 2200 miles from all I know too Roz ... whah, whah

i'm in a bubble in this culture presently, and no tastykakes here either!

no Wise potato chips, no parks with swings, and stuff for us 40 + crowds, to get lax ...

and no familiarity - favorite places, people and things!

even the crabs are different!

i try to make the best of it and look at it all as a temp. adventure, but after 10+ years, it's used up ... and i wanna go home, at least half a year.

when i get well, i will work on that like mad!

also, meanwhile - what else you miss, maybe we can get something for you too!

with love,
ni

Hi alleykat

i never thought of that. we have community lunch days here where women cook something from their own culture....indian, jamaican etc...for everyone to try.

i've never done it as i'm not particularly into Scottish food...but yes, i could cook them things like pumpkin pie.

YAY! thanks for the idea Missing Yankee culture ...sorry!!!

I'm happy your getting to come to the US, I hope it helps with your homesickness.

If you make it near Arkansas you let me know and I'll treat you to some good ol' southren bbq and a glass of sweet tea!!!

There are no Hershey bars in the UK??? I didn't know that.

We can get Hershey's in the UK, but it's not all that common and mostly found in specialist stores and stuff. At least in my area.

Whenever my family vacations in the US they bring me back bunches of American foods, like Lucky Charms and Oreos and Marshmallow Fluff....all things we can't get over here lol.
