So, it snowed last night and it's still snowing today. It's alot...for me. LOL

It's a few inches already and I wanted to go somewhere, but my tires don't have enough tread, I guess, cuz I stopped at a light and when it turned green I tried to go and ended up almost in the curb on the other side of the road! I knew the tread was not thick, but I didn't realize I have no traction.

My question is this....I have never bought tires before and don't know if I really NEED snow tires or if just regular new tires with good tread would work?

Last year was my first driving in snow as I was from California, so living in snow is still new for me. Any other suggestions would be welcome for driving or car maintenance for snowy weather, too.

Thanks

For me, the best tires to use (I live in New Hampshire and it does snow here....a lot sometimes) are all season radial tires. I get the biggest bang for my buck with them

I drive with all season tires (marked M+S) all year, and I'm happy. A lot of people tell me it is a bad idea, I should buy both summer tires and winter tires, because the temperature gets up to +30C in Summer and down to -15C or even -25C in Winter, but well, I don't see why should do that. If manufacturers make tires suitable for all seasons, why shouldn't I use it, lol. From my driving experience, driving skills are more important than tires in snowy weather. Of cource, summer tires are no good on snow and it is very dangerous, but all season tires are ok if you know how to drive on snow.

Great! Thanks for the info. I don't drive fast at all and am, probably, more careful than the average driver because I am so scared about slipping and sliding. Hmmm...can going too slow be a problem?! I will hit the tire shop tomorrow and see if they have the all season tires.

Thanks again!

I agree that your best bet would be all season tires, I also wanted to add a random piece of advice for snow driving try to avoid using your brakes. My brakes have made me end up in the ditch many times, see I told you it was random advice. LOL

I just took my car in for regularly scheduled serivicing and had to put all new tires on my car - the others were seriously worn. Expensive but definitely worth doing before winter really hits. Got all seasons.

But they've passed a law that says next year, everyone has to have snow tires up here - so looks like I'll have two sets of tires. Not sure where I'll store my regular tires as I live in an apartment. maybe my landlord will let me have some space in his garage.
