My friend lost her cat today. She and her hubby don't have any children... so their two cats are/were like their babies. I was at her house when the vet called to let her know the surgery wasn't successful.

The really horrible thing about it all is, that my friend was the one accidently running over her own cat driving out from the driveway by their house.

He had a dislocated hip and they fixed that... a wound on one of the corneas... then sent him home since they couldn't see any internal damage on the scan.

Early this morning Rocky got sooo sick and they took him back to the vets. They then discovered that the urine bladder was injured and urine had gone out into the blood. They tried to perform a surgery on him as I was visiting my friend... but nothing could be done.

My friend has OCD just like I do. Her worst obsession has been about accidently running over one of her cats, another animal or a human being. She has had to drive back and look to see that didn't happen... when she's been at her worst. She went through CBT this fall and has gotten much better about many of her obsessions and compulsions. Now I'm so worried she might regress because of this very triggering event; running over her own precious darling cat and him dying.

Any suggestions as to how to help her deal with this?

I begged her to call her psychologist... who she's not seeing anymore... to help her work with this trauma.

I also told her to call me when ever she feels the need to talk or even just cry on the phone.

Please send your good thoughts and vibes to my friend.

My dear friend lost her precious cat today...

I think the best thing you can do for your friend is exactly what you are doing, being there for her if she wants to talk.

That's so sad. She's in my thoughts. I struggle with OCD too so I know how horrible it can be.

I am sorry for your friend I kind of know how she feels. I lost my beloved cat back in Dec...I am still having a lot of guilt and just feel like hell on it..I don't know how you can help other than what you suggested to her and still doing all you have..being there.....You may want to drop over more so she can't isolate....she may ...Been there...Also DON'T tell her she will or can get another cat someday....I find it annoys me and diminshes how I felt about my cat. Also, when she does bring it up REMIND her of all she did like taking kitty to the vets and just being a good cat mom (in all the ways you know she was) it will help...Mostly be there and keep reminding her..when she brings it up....she did more for her cat than a lot of people do....many vet bills and so on..I am very sorry this is sad

Thanks all of you for your replies and pieces of advice.

I told my friend about you all thinking of her in this and that touched her deeply.

My friend is slowly feeling better. She saw her psychologist yesterday and that helped her a lot.

I'm so very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend's kitty. Our pets give us unconditional love and affection and are always there for us. It's heartbreaking to lose one of your "children".

In the past I found a website called : http://rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm

and found a great deal of comfort there. You might take a look and decide if she might find something to help her. I believe we will see them again and that they are waiting for us.
