I went to the doctor yesterday. She looked at my neck and asked a bunch of questions about it and thinks I have permanant whiplash. She ordered alot of scans and x-rays and physical therapy. She said if that don't help I have to get shots in my back

Cortisone shots? My dad had them a few times and except the last time, they really did help him (he's got severe back problems).

She said lidocaine. I guess that's the kind of stuff they give you at the dentist.

lidocaine is a numbing medication, sometimes it is mixed with a steroid as well. When I worked for a poditrist, as a medical assistant, I used to draw up the injections for whatever porceedures he needed to do. Steroids like cortisone are really good for inflammation like strains/scar tissue that cause pain/.
Really take advantage of the PT, that is your best bet thunderbear. It will help in the long term, the numbing medicine only works for short term, but after the PT, if there is still pain, the injection will help. Good luck let us know how it is going.

I agree with Beholden. I did have a severe back injury a couple of years ago, in which the nerves were being pinched in the spinal column. No pain medications helped relieve my pain at all. I saw both a neurosurgeon as well as a couple of physical therapists. I did also have steroid injected into my spinal column. That didn't work real well either. Physical therapy ~ doing special exercises, with a PT, to safely regain strenth worked best for me. Back surgery doesn't completely relieve pain in most cases, and there are long-term effects. A biggie: back strength is limited for life. Many people still require pain medications and treatments after surgery. I vote for PT in most cases!
