Has anyone had a PET scan for cancer? I learned today that I have to have one from my chin down. Will I be in a tube? Any information will be most appreciate.

Thank you for reading this.

This site might help January - http://www.petscan.org/frames_cancer.html

And yes, it looks like you will be in a tube. The outside is not as big looking as an MRI machine. I hope the site helps hon!

Dear January,

PET scans are used for specific screening, and not all cancers are screened for with a PET scan.

CT scans are more commonly used, contrast and non-contrast.

Do you know why you are taking a PET?

Aurora ~ it's so nice to hear from you, and I know this thing will pass with the hair... Keep your lovely head warm this winter, perhaps with a pretty knit cap ~ yes?

I found NeuroTalk people were extremely helpful with information around scan of various sorts. Perhaps you could post your question there, as well.

I'm sorry I don't know about the the specific scan you are asking about.

((((((((((( Patricia, Night & Hunny )))))))))))))

Thank you so much for your kind replies.

The PET is because the other scans can't give them a clear view of the axillary areas. I'm seeing a surgeon on Wed., before the PET scan, so maybe I won't have to have the scan. I just don't know. No matter what the outcome, we have to hurry, hurry, hurry.

((((((((((( My Dear Friends ))))))))))

I have the most wonderful news!!!!! The surgeon says that though I have tumors, they are not cancerous! Yes, it's true!!! I am so excited and so thrilled that I hardly know what to do.

Thank you so much for asking and for caring.

I am so happy for you that it is not cancer. What does the doctor think it is?

Well, this is going to sound really weird, but it's me, so what else can we expect.

Somehow, fatty tumors have grown up into my underarms and there is one on my neck like a swollen lymph. They contain blood vessels. When I put my arms down, the tumors squish the blood vessels which causes enormous amounts of pain, swelling and inflammation.

Who knew?

I am so blessed though. It could have been so much worse.

Thats great that its not cancer and nothing life threating. Did they say they can do surgery on it to make you more comfortable though?

The Dr. told me to lose weight, I guess to reduce the size of the tumors and to also use hot compresses to reduce the inflammation. I am normally as skinny as a rail, but lately my weight has shot up, so I've got to try to get it off asap.

If I lose the weight and the pain isn't helped, then we'll have to talk about surgery because I don't want to go around in this much pain 24/7.

Well that would be great if you didn't have to have surgery and just loosing the weight did it. I hope you can lose it fast and that the pain goes away.

Thank you for reading this.
Yes I had a Pet Scan for cancer and yes you go in a tube but its very quiet and I closed my eyes and tried to think of the ocean in Hawaii, haha. It made me relax and then I realized that it was just a strange place to be but painless. I did have an IV for the chemical that has to be used to get the images but the nurse was very skilled and I didn't hardly feel anything. Just put your mind in a good place and it should be fine! My Pet Scan was also from the neck down. The machine moves back and forth a few times but it's a SMOOTH ride!
