Does anybody know much about heart problems? I have tried to do research online but there are just so many different conditions I don't know how to tell if mine could be serious or not.

My heart has been "acting up" randomly, it will last a few moments and then go back to normal.

It has done this in the past, which the doctor was worried about but ended up saying wasn't serious - I was very young and don't remember the details. However, I never mentioned that I experienced chest pain. Time went by and things got better.

But now for the first time, I have actually felt intense, pounding, heart palpitations accompanied by sudden, sharp pulsing headache. It is very brief, lasting a few minutes. I have also felt the palpitations with irregular heart beat, where it seems to sometimes skip a beat and sometimes add one, go quickly and then stop, totally irratic. That too lasts for a few minutes. Just today I also experienced a sudden sharp, stabbing pain on the left side of my chest. It is worse when I breathe, but it seems like it goes away if I breathe really deeply (it'll hurt reaal bad and then kind of bubble away).

Some background details: I am 21 and also suffer from late stage lyme disease, which I know can effect the heart. I often feel light-headed and/or short of breath but I believe I also may suffer from asthma. I faint easily. I also have been experiencing a bad muscle cramp in my calf if that has anything to do with it.

Please let me know if you have any idea what this might be.

I'm sorry you are experiencing these scary and bothersome symptoms. I will post a link to the website that, in the medical community, among cardiologists and electrophysiologist especially, is highly lauded; HOWEVER, it is of the utmost importance that you contact your physician. Working daily with cardiac patients, I know that there is no "normal" except a normal for you. One patient can symptoms as you describe and have a heart attack and another can have the same symptoms and it ends up not being cardiac related at all...a personal interview and physical exam as well as tests are needed. Please don't put this off.

we can't diagnose here but I would strongly suggest seeing a cardiologist. mine "acts up" from time to time but after wearing a heart monitor for a month they found out my heart throws extra beats at times. again I think you should see a cardio.

I get an irregular heart beat once in a while - so the doctor sent me to a cardiologist and I had to wear a halter monitor for 2 days to monitor my heart rhythm. It turns out I have the non dangerous kind. The best thing is go to your doctor and request this test - he may also want to send you for a stress test.

Sounds like me..... but you cannot reply on information online you must go back to your doctor and have your heart check out again - what may have been nothing at one time could have change now... my doctor checks my heart every year as I do have some heart complications, but nothing that warrants surgery at this present time.

Time to get to the doctor and let him figure it out. Heart palpitations often are nothing to worry about, but I understand how worrisome they can be. It feels weird, doesn't it? They drove me up the wall. Anyway, let your doctor decide. This is really not a good problem to be trying to diagnose over the internet.

Sounds like ventricular bigeminy. http://www.heartpoint.com/ventricula...hmiasmore.html there is some info on Ventricular arrhythmias. As others have said I would highly suggest going to see a doctor preferably a cardiologist. Good luck!

Mine does this quite frequently...only mine will last for hours and hours. Doctors have told me that it's sinus tachycardia and not serious, but there are other conditions that could also cause this. I would go in and have a workup done just to be safe.

I hope you will see your doctor for an professional explanation. When symptoms persist or change/worsen it's time to go back to the doctor and/or get a second opinion. It's for your health and your peace of mind.

Irregular beats are not always abnormal. And sometimes abnormal is normal for the person. My EKG's are always 'abnormal' but that is my 'normal'. Good to know so I can advise the EKG tech/nurse/doctor.

The sharp pulsing headache is what would concern me enough to see a doctor. Is it blood pressure spiking, for example.

I hope you will see your doctor so you can feel better about what is going on.

I know that sharp stabbing pains are nothing to worry about. Heart pain is not sharp or stabbing, it is dull and achy. Most palpitations are not harmful and totally normal, but if you are worried, you should see a doctor to get tests done.

Sharp stabbing pains are something to worry about and should be evaluated medically.
Thanks for this!

Pains that you describe do not always indicate heart problems, as there could be pulmonary issues involved as well. The one thing you said about a muscle "cramp" in your calf concerned me. I recently met a fairly young man who had a medical emergency involving similar symptoms that were actually pulmonary blockages.......blood clots in the lungs.

Regardless, you need a medical workup ASAP. This is nothing to wait around about.

Everything I'd read says sharp stabbing pains are muscle related, but the palpitations can be something. We can't know. Usually they are harmless, but sometimes not.

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Heart-Car...chest-pain.htm

Expert: David F. Cowling, Jr., RDCS - 11/18/2006

Question
Hi Dr,

I'm 26 yrs old male, 5'6, about 58kg, I don't smoke or drink, i rarely exercise, and I've been having a sharp chest pain for a week, its below my left nipple, the first rib below my left nipple to be exct. i can feel the pain comes from under the rib. its about a size of a thumb.

The sharp pain usually last for a few seconds, 5-10 times a day, it happened when i was in bed, working, eating and even just doing nothing. it feels like someone is poking that area with a finger, or "some bubbles going through that area". a mild pain usually follows right after the sharp pain, and it last several hrs. it feels a little better if i expand my chest.

My family members have no record of heart disease, i have never experience any major illness. I have yet to perform any test.

Is there any chance that i'm having a heart disease? thank you for your help Dr!

Answer
No. The symptoms you describe cannot be cardiac pain. typical heart pain is a left sided burning, pressure squeezing, aching pain that is brought on by exertion, radiates to the jaw or left arm, and is relieved by rest or nitroglycerine. A sharp pain that lasts for a few seconds cannot be cardiac pain.

You should definitely see a doctor for your symptoms though because of your shortness of breath and other symptoms.

Just letting people know that sharp pains are most likely nothing to worry about.

Heart & Cardiology - Mitral valve Prolapse

Expert: David Richardson - 11/8/2008

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

I was idagnosed with having a minor Mitral Valve Prolapse last Marcy (2007). I have a slight murmur (which my doctor can't hear but the specialist can) & when i had an ultrasound done of my heart he said i had a thicker Valve than normal but it was nothing to worry about. He also said that my MVP was very minor. I am a big worrier and keep getting chest pain - i know that chest pain is associated with MVP but i don't know whether i am just thinking about ot all th etime.

Sometimes the pain is extremely sharp and piercing and it takes mhy breath away a bit. The pain is where my heart is and sometimes its just like a little dull ache where the heart is and just under it. These pains last for 10 seconds at the most but they are driving me nuts.

The cardiologist said that my pain is nothing to worry about at this stage and said he isn't concerned about my MVP but will see me every 1-2yrs.

Many Thanks

Jayne

ANSWER: Dear Ms. Coutts,

Sharp chest pain is not likely to be from heart and is probably cramping of muscles around ribs. If pressure on the painful area modifies the pain, makes it better or worse, you have proven that it is chest wall pain, since you cannot affect heart or lungs by pressing on the chest. Chest wall pain is a big nuisance but no threat to life or health.

Please write back if this note doesn't answer all your questions.

David Richardson

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: It's strange but when i press on where the pain is i cannot really feel it. Like i say its not painful all of the time just every now ad again i get a sharp stabbing sensation.

A couple of times i have got a stabbing sensation that gets worse with every breath (only when breathing in) which lasts for about 10 breaths then it went - this was very scary.

Also sometimes when i bend over or twist to the side i can almost feel something just below my sternum - it's a weird feeling - do you know what it could be? There are no lumps or annything like that.

Thanks

Answer
Dear Jayne,

When you press where the pain is, does the pain go away, or is it not modified at all? Pain with a deep breath MIGHT be rubbing of a lung against the ribs if the lung was inflamed or affected by a little clot, but pain from those causes would not last but a few days. How long has this pain, worse with a breath in, been present? If more than a few weeks, off and on, it's not serious, just cramping of muscle around ribs. How old are you?

Please go to the ER or to a cardiologist and have them do a complete check up and stress test etc.
you may even have to wear a halter monitor to see what's going on with the heartbeat.
i have problems and thought several times i' was having a heart attack. i have heart valve damage in 3 valves and in left atrium. so you can not be too careful. please don't put it off. even if it's nothing, then get checked anyway. you never know when it might be something that you can avoid if you are checked out completely.
if you don't have insurance, go to your city or county hospital and ask for free care.
please do it for your family who loves you.
