Just had my first tooth extraction today; broke it last night.

Pain, anxiety, guilt, too, because my friend paid for it.

I am usually a very healthy person and always afraid of doctors and dentists.

has anyone here ever had a tooth pulled or gone thru dental surgery/work that freaked them out?

Ty,

Billi

I am very much afraid of the dentist, so whenever I have t have something done it freaks me out majorly.

I have had a tooth removed, so no how your feeling.

Please dont feel guilty, Im sure your friend is ok with it? Does your friend now how you feel with the guilt? Maybe have a chat with your friend for some reassurance?

How are you feeling today?

I don't mind the dentist; my stepmother started taking me every six months for cleanings and checkups when I was five and it was actually one of the more stable relationships in my life so I see it positively! My last dentist I really loved (a woman dentist!) and that made going even "fun". But because I'm such a comfortable patient, the dentists enjoy me too so I'm sure that makes the whole situation much easier for all of us.

I did have a really big operation (my broken tooth was too "low" for a crown so they had to lengthen it) and that was a bit scary because it was at a specialist and had root canals, stitches, and other things to go along with it and I didn't know the people or the procedure. A lot of my fears have to do with the unknown. I have to work on myself not to get "ahead" of where I am at the moment.

I'm glad you have such a friend who can help by paying. Getting dental work is very important, can affect one's overall health. I'm sorry you feel guilty about it. Hope you can work your head around to being proud of getting it done at all, despite the fear, pain, and guilt. That's a real accomplishment on your part.

The dentist ALWAYS makes me anxious. I really hate it. I'm not sure why it does, I guess it's the whole idea that someone has their hands (albeit gloved) in my mouth. I don't even like being touched on the arm by people who aren't close to me, so I guess it feels too close. There's fear of the pain, as well, but it usually doesn't hurt much, so I know that's not all of it.

I'm always glad I went, once I'm out of there, though. I think my teeth are worth the stress and bit of pain (and apparently you do, too!) I usually do something nice for myself afterward, like buy myself a small present (sometimes food, if I can eat! haha! or maybe some bubble bath/nice smelling soap for later.) If I have that to look forward to during the appointment, I can think about that instead of what's actually going on.

I definitely relate with your dislike of the dentist, though. Yuck.

ty everyone.

I didn't get back to this becasue it didn't show up on my email, so I thought no one replied! I'm glad you did.

They did not tell me how much it was going to hurt.

LOL From now on, any time a doctor or dentist gives me pain meds, I know it will hurt afterward.

but I wish they had warned me.

I am constantly on ibuprofen and tylenol now.

Had to special order a toothache pack at the drugstore; I will pick it up tomorrow.

I did get it checked and he didnt' tell me what he ws doing, just "packing it with medication". They acted like I was imposing. He looked at my chart and said, (can you believe this?!) "There's nothing on here about a tooth pulled." OMG.

I started crying and siad, "I'm in PAIN!" and I called my friend in at the top of my lungs. "R.! Tell this guy I had my tooth pulled! I need a WITNESS!"

I have to go to another dentist for a second opinion because they want to yank out all my other wisdom teeth and I heard on the net that Western Dental is not a good place!

Is anyone on here famililar with Western Dental?

I do not like how cold and cavalier they are about my mouth and my pain!

What do you think of a dentist who doesnt' see something on your own chart about a tooth pull?

OMG OMG OMG!!!!

ty again,

Billi

Scares the living daylights out of me! Be kind to yourself. Nobody likes to go to the dentist and having teeth pulled is the WORST! Have pudding and milkshakes and lukewarm tea. Taking a friend with you is good! It helps to have an advocate, especially when you're in too much pain to fight your own battles.

our front tooth broke about 3 weeks ago and i wont even tell you the pure terror even seeing the word strikes in us, but we know it has to be taken care of and thankfully my sister will be footing the bill but for this simple 30min procedure we are going to be heavily sedated before even getting there and then put completely out. i admire anyone who can do this without paralyzing terror

bah......I went for a cleaning/check up......

I have to get 2 crowns done and 3 cavities filled...over the next 2 months...oh joy.

1st crown next week.

Plus, while the dentist was in there she was poking at my back tooth, and part of my filling fell out.....

Between the ages of 6 and 8 I had 6 teeth pulled for absolutely no reason. The dentist said it was to make room, but if I remember right PERMANENT TEETH COME IN EVENTUALLY! It caused me to be terrified of dentists and all doctors for several years. Also didn't help my needle phobia. Shots in the mouth were NOT fun. They barely numbed it too so it really hurt obviously. It was just a really bad dentist that also didn't seem to know how to deal with scared kids.

Luckily when I got my braces when I was 11 I had a much better and nicer dentist, and I'm not afraid of dentists anymore. Although he once suggested I have one tooth pulled. I was 15 and it was my last baby tooth. I was still scared of that so I pulled out my own tooth yeah bad idea...lol

Sorry if that was kind of a rant, I don't get an opportunity to talk about this stuff much and I'm still not too happy about that first dentist.

I hope you are feeling better today.

I have alway had very bad teeth. They say that when my permanent teeth were forming they formed without good enamel because of my being sick, high temperatures & antibiotics. My whole life I was grinding my teeth. By the time I was in highschool, I had teeth that were cracking & falling apart (that was in the 60's). Every dentist appointment was nothing but horror. I always went to the dentist for cleaning & fillings. In 1994 (I was in my mid 40's), & ended up on AD's, the teeth grinding got worse (I didn't realize it at the time), but since that point, every tooth in my mouth is broken off & 3 years ago, I needed to have them all pulled & get dentures. No insurance & no money hasn't put me in a place where I can afford it, so I haven't been able to do anything about it. I need more done than just the teeth pulled also as the grinding of the teeth formed a soft tissue on the back side of my lower teeth that has to be removed for any dentures to be able to fit in my mouth. Can't do implants (too expensive & also, my gums are too small & would need grafting (estimated cost of $40,000 & no guarantee it would work anyway).

Hoping that this summer or fall I will be able to afford to get this taken care of before I get to a point where I have an emergency situation. I have no idea how this is all going to work out. Have to look into clinics & other options. Have so many other issues I'm dealing with, it's low on the priority list at this point, but just hanging on that no major emergency situation like an abcess happens before I get around to taking care of it......guess if an emergency does happen however, it will force me to take action.....not exactly the best choice though.

My truck needs tires before I can afford my teeth.....isn't life grand????

Me! I am the odd one! I like going to the dentist. I look forward to it actually. I love having my teeth cleaned and while I hated that I was losing a tooth the procedure of extraction was no biggie for me. Root canal, no prob.

Yoda is strange. Yes?
