I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and want to be put on birth control to help with my periods. My GP said he wants me to see a Gyno because he doesn't feel comfortable dealing with that aspect of my life. Just what I need another doctor.
Anyway do you guys have any ideas on which birth control pill I should ask for? What works for you? Jan

I would ask for the lowest dosage of what would work for PCOS. Maybe yasmine?
Don't get the implant. It will make you crazy. Just an FYI, I was on BC from 16-24 yrs old. When I came off of it, I couldn't believe how depressed it had made me. I've felt better (with the depression) since I quit taking it. |

I'd definitely want to see the GYN and they can help you to decide the best meds. Lower dose pills are recommended over all b/c of the side-effects and risks of the higher dose pills but don't know specific ones for PCOS; I'm so sorry I can't help there.

Implanon, one of my bigger regrets.

What happened? I see that someone else had problems on it so what is the problem with that one? Jan

I have 2 friends who this worked beautifully for them.
I have extensive endometriosis and small fibroids. Endo for me requires a higher dose estrogen and the fibroids do not like estrogen at all or tolerates very little. So finding the right balance is difficult with excruciating pain and discomfort during my periods but in between too b/c of the adhesions and implants elsewhere on healthy tissue. The implanon significantly affected my moods, had tremendous weight gain, saw an increase in the frequency of my migraines, and still did not control my cycle or relief period symptoms. Even after stopped, the side-effects last awhile and took some time for my system to return to normal. I was at a low point and desperate for relief in picking this. What I regret is deciding on and getting it based solely on the doc's advice w/o researching it first and this was the first and the last I have done this. I just wanted for once not to have to research, so tired of it. Once I started having side-effects and went back to research, I never would have chosen this for my dx as it was not recommended (out of the box thinking on the doc's part) and had I looked initially, it could have been prevented. Some out of the box thinking can be beneficial but this actual had things in the clinical packet indicating this was too far out of the box. |

I would go to an endrocronologist but the only one we have in my area is an idiot. I have gone to see him but I call him Dr. Evil. He has bad breath, wouldn't talk to me only talked to my mom and the time I went without her he asked where she was, told me all I needed to do was lose some weight and wouldn't give me any tools on how to do that. So I am sticking with a gyno. I am hoping the one I chose will be able to help.

Hi there,
I too have PCOS, i was diagnosed probably 9 years ago at the Mayo Clinic in MN. I was put on the birth control pill called Micrgestin. I have had absolutly no side effects from it so it can be used with meds for mental illnesses too. I do get cramps once in a while, but IBprophin usually takes that away. Sometimes I don't even get a period and if I do they are VERY lite ![]() I do agree with the rest, seing your gyno is probably the best way to go as they should be trained in someone with PCOS. But that is my opinion. Good luck and please keep us posted. jen

Well I saw the doctor today and she put me on Loestrin 24 Fe. I found out from the home health people though that it interacts with my Topamax though so I am going to call my pharmacy tomorrow to see how it interacts and if it is a bad interaction will call the doctor to see about a different one. If it isn't something major will just take this. Home health said it wasn't something to worry about but any interaction doesn't seem good to me.
I had a Pap Smear, breast check and pelvic exam. I wasn't planning on any of that but oh well. At least it is out of the way for a year or two. She said that if it comes back normal that I could probably wait a couple of years before having another one done. Woopie!! She seemed nice and knowlegable. She was about my age which I liked. I also liked that she was a female. So the appointment went well. Jan
