I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this post but now I'm a bit concerned and was hoping for advice/ideas/answers, anything for a bit of piece of mind for a single mom without medical or money for medical or money for a much needed ER visit if need be.

Well lately, the last few weeks especially, I have been having trouble understanding every day American English. I'm from the US, born and raised. I love reading and love words, I have never had trouble comprehending anything really until lately. Now it doesn't last long but man it's aggravating.

I will be sitting in my room watching TV, talking to someone or just doing anything and out of no where I just can't understand anymore. It only lasts 30 seconds to 2 minutes tops but it's so strange. I will try my hardest but no matter what for that time, I can't understand even the word "The". Everything anyone or anything says seems like it's all blended together, all one word and none of it sounds like a familiar word or sound really, like what is being said I have never heard before. This makes conversations very frustrating sometimes.

I'm not sure if it's in my head, or physically in my head or what. I'm just now concerned after speaking with someone in chat about this problem and am hoping, well not hoping anyone experiences this, but hoping someone could shed some light on what may be going on?~ Someone who may have had similar experiences. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

we can't give a diagnosis here at pc. I would maybe advise calling a nurse help line if there is one in your area or even go to a charity type hospital. they have to see you and there are programs to help pay for medical. I really hope you find out something soon.

PurpleFlyingMonkeys, what you're going through sounds frustrating all the way up to frightening--I'm sorry this is happening to you. I can't offer you much more than support and concern, and I wish I could help. Is the inability to discern language purely auditory, or does this happen when you're reading as well?

Now that I think of it, maybe I can help a bit, too. I don't know where in the US you're located, but I had a medical emergency with no coverage, and managed to get through it with a nominal fee. I received great care, free meds, and relatively cheap follow-up visits. If you think my experience may help, please feel free to PM me and I'll tell you what happened. And Bebop is right about payment plans at hospitals--even a private facility would work something out with you.

Best of luck to you and I hope you feel better soon!

i believe the term is anaphasia, the inability to use words, perhaps it also applies to the inability to understand words, i'm not sure,, but if you are low income, you might qualify for something called Indigent Care, meaning you have no means to pay. please don't wait to find out what is causing this,,, best wishes, Gus

i often get this but mine is with my native english!! it can happen anytime, i know someone is talking to me and when it is time to respond but i have no idea what they said or how/what to respond!! it's an 'errrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmm errrrr what' moment!!! as though my thinking just stops dead for a moment or two! i have had a general mri which found nothing to report, i think it is brain overload, it happens mainly when i am in a busy / noisy environment and when i am trying to process questions or conversations requiring responses!!

it could be some form of daydreaming/conversion but i am not able to think of other things during these episodes either so dreaming does not sound right. I become unable to move my mouth to say anything to begin with then errrrm then what, then i end up appologising with something like 'sorry, brain dead, what? '

of course i can only give my experience as i am not a medical professional, like others said above, you do need to find out what is causing this because there are many thing which it could be, some serious, some not, and most places will work out a plan you can afford. you may be suprised some may have funds for caring for those unable to pay!!

good luck xx

hank you to EVERYONE who replied, I appreciate them very much. I will look into getting it checked out. I just lost my medical not even a month ago and wasn't expecting to need it so soon lol. I will look around and try to find something. I'm wondering though now if it's something physically wrong or mentally wrong. The human mind works in strange ways and I already have blackouts and a lot of other chaos going on up in my head, I wonder if it's due to any of that. Maybe I'm missing a connection to that and blackouts and the noise/chaos in my head, all I guess would be better handled with a doctor of some sort. I will look into the MRI and doctors visit. I'm not sure about a T though, I've been doing rather well on my own without meds or therapy for over a year now, they had me zombified the last time I was on them and I'm not wishing to go back down that route. None the less, I guess I should find out what is going on. I was hoping I guess that it was a normal thing and I would have tons of replies saying "Oh yeah this happens to me all the time, I'm just spacey" or something along those lines lol...

Oh well...

Again thank you everyone for your replies! I never expected this many and it's so comforting to know that on here, no matter how long I'm away, I'm still welcomed back! Thank you Bebop and racee, again you are probably right everyone and I probably need to at least have it checked. Gus, I'm not sure if it would be the same but I'm going to start with "anaphasia" and go from there, hopefully it will be a good starting point for looking into it.

Nola I'm not sure if it's purely auditory or not. Most likely yes though. I just am not much of a reader any more. This doesn't happen too often but does enough to notice a change. I myself though can make out perfect sentences and make sense to myself and others. About a week ago I was talking to my boyfriend and he starts talking to me, with a movie in the back, and all of a sudden I just couldn't understand any more. I tried to listen to the TV to see if my boyfriend was messing with me but the TV was scrambled too. I told him "I don't know what's going on but I have NO clue what you or anything is saying, it's all jumbled and mixed and I can't figure it out". He said something in response I couldn't understand even mouth reading then the confusion left. Maybe that means it is just in my head. I don't know. Thank you so much for your very kind reply thought : )

Yellowted... I experience that as well to an extent and I am very sorry. Too many times I will be talking and mid word even stop and can't remember what I was saying at all, I think that is in relation to my DD or some other disorder or whatever you want to call it. I'm sorry you experience that, I can vouch for you that it is extremely frustrating and embarrassing when you are put on the spot to answer something but you can't because you can't remember when it's time to answer.

I'm glad your MRI came back clean, it's always a good thing to have a good MRI reading : ) Thank you for the advice, you might be onto something and even if it's not the same as what you are experiencing you are showing me some connections between this and my diagnosis'!

You are all too wonderful : ) Thank you for everything you do!

You are totally welcome, PurpleFlyingMonkeys. Please keep us informed of your situation, your care, and progress. Just what you described in that interaction with your boyfriend when the TV was on sounds so confusing, scary, and frustrating. I hope you're able to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible, and any diagnosis points to a speedy and full recovery.
