Thanks for the heads up, trixielou. I remember reading something about how awful the decaffeination process is, and I'm glad you've reminded me to continue bugging my folks about dropping this habit. Don't get me wrong, I love coffee, but not decaf. Problem for me is getting my folks to listen, as once they have developed a routine they like, it's tough to convince them otherwise, whether it's deleterious for them or not.

Talk to me, Yoda...please tell me more. It'd be in my best interest to be well-armed going into this potential battle about decaf consumption with my parents.

oh i am soooo glad theres people who know this as bad as the diet cola industry with their aspartame & sucralose but thats another story! i dont drink regular (well maybe 16 oz) cuz of my nerves & the caffeine & once i start i cant just have one am used to havin a little regular & then a pot of decaf my body is to the point where its tellin me in every way no more of this junk! as 4 ur parents pull up dichloromethane & ethyl acetate on the internet & show them just what they r & this poison is used in the decaf process of course none of it says directly about the harmful uses in decaf u have to really dig but if u have time u can find stuff that hints to it workers who work around this stuff have health problems & we r ingesting it in this crap! as 4 regular i still have the strong stuff my hubby left here so im gonna find some thats not 100% colombian unless they lie too about caffeine content im glad im not just losin my mind & u guys have same stories!!!

Is the "water" decaf process as harmful?

I have mixed reviews on regular coffee. Depending upon where it's grown (as in some countries the ground might contain particulates I'm not eager to consume) is my first decision. But I have good effects from the caffeine and those have to be weighed against the bad effects...on a daily basis usually!

But when I or anyone tries to warn people about their drugs of choice (whether coffee or soda) it's very likely to draw back a nub. In a way, I understand: there are so many bad foods that one can withdraw from their diet first, don't pick on their addicted properties ones first

Be well.

Thanks again, trixielou, I shall look up some info on the chemicals and be sure to pass it along to the folks. They're a hard sell when it comes to this stuff, though I have made some headway here and there.

I know what you mean about trying to keep as many badly processed foods and food items out of your body--I try to be a conscientious consumer in all senses of the word too. There are times I wish I could grow my own fruit and veg, and maybe I can make that come true with perseverance and a little luck. I make peace with the situation by eating as well as possible, but I am subject to my own slips and indulgences in that arena too.

JD, I buy my coffee from certain markets that ensure fair trade and responsible farming practices, but who really knows in the long run! I know what you're saying though, and as I said, I try my best to make careful choices about what I purchase and ultimately consume.

I don't mind that the folks drink coffee, just want 'em to avoid unnecessary additives where possible. But you are right--coffee and other addictive food items are a rough starting point in trying to get anyone to amend their proclivities and habits.

A good day, caffeinated or not, to all.
Thanks for this!

I've heard that "swiss water decaf" process is healthier. I don't know how legit it is either way, but it's something to look at. Another option could be to go with an americano -- which is espresso with water. It's how Europeans drink "coffee" apparently? But you could always make weaker coffee with more water than coffee. It could taste weird though, but then you wouldn't need to have the decaf stuff.

Try this stuff!
I'm a coffee drinker (organic only) but I like this barley drink at night. It tastes/looks exactly like instant coffee to me.
It's all natural and has no caffeine. It is bitter on its own, just like coffee, but very good with cream or soy creamer and honey. Very roasty. Yum! You mix it into water exactly like instant coffee.
Hard to find though, sometimes Wholefoods has it or you hafta buy it online. Enjoy...
