my ten year old daughter, started her period for the first time on the 17th of this month..... seems to young i know... she was hurting pretty bad.... i looked at the over the counter stuff like midol but it says not to give to children under 12. I gave her motrin and it helped some... does any one have any suggestions that might help her to ease it up a little? i dont want to give her something that will end up hurting her... mine is not that painful so i cant help....

If she is cramping badly you can fill a hot water bottle and have her put it on her abdomen..that helps me alot when cramps are bad. You may also ask her doctor what she can be given for period-related pain, besides motrin.

I agree that the hot water bottle helps, you could also think about a hot bath and breathing/ relaxation exercises... playing sports/ some kind of exercise actually helps too even though many people don't particularly feel up to it when they're in pain.... warmth helps the most though, it relaxes the nerves or something..... if the cramps becomes too uncomfortable though I would take her to the doctor who would be best able to advise you on which meds to take... ie. which OTC meds. the point is, most people can find SOMETHING to ease their pain, a good point for your daughter to understand.

make sure she is drinking enough water. cramping comes from when the walls of the uterus is contracting trying to shack loose the material. When I was having trouble with cramping my doctor recommended drinking more water so that the body had that excess fluid to help thin out and break up the material. The more water intake the thinner the blood. which has worked for my cramping (and also works for when passing clots instead of a normal flow.)

On questions like that one, I tend to also send them over to the pharmacist. Our pharmacists are there to help with advice/consulting in additition to filling prescriptions. So you might consider going over to your favorite drug store or your regular pharmacist and ask him/her that question.

Yeah, you could even call most pharmacies and they'll talk to you on the phone or return your call.

Good point about the pharmacist... I think I trust my pharmacist more than my MD.

This is going to sound strange.
Do you have a cat? Is it friendly enough to take a nap on her belly? When I get bad cramps I take my Milo and lay him across my belly and pet him until he purrs. the combined warmth and vibration seems to help. You know, I bet some sort of vibrating heat pad job would do the same thing! And, no worries. I was 11 when I got mine. |
