My asthma went out of control last night and I had to take an ambulance to the ER. I got a "cold" Tuesday or Wednesday (worse than that apparently) and was not having a good time yesterday. DH and I did not get home until Midnight and I didn't sleep all that well; the breathing treatments made my throat raw and sinus pressure made it feel like someone had stepped on my face. So, I could breathe but. . .

My poor DH had to go out early this morning to get the two prescriptions filled for prednisone and an antibiotic and my pharmacy doesn't open until 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays so I sent him to a Walgreens that I thought was 24 hour but it isn't; its pharmacy didn't open until 9:00 either so he went to ours and hung around until then.

But the doctor in the ER was saying they're having a whole lot of such things this season, that it is weird and lots of people are on antibiotics and they aren't working, etc. Anybody else seen this? My asthma is generally well controlled and "tame" and when I get a cold (which I don't have given the antibiotic; they did chest xrays), it doesn't interact or make the asthma worse or anything, this is a first for me.

(((Perna))) - so sorry you're sick and you have to battle asthma on a regular basis. When will you get the results of the chest Xrays? As you know already, I was sick for a month with pneumonia and was on 2 different antibiotics. I know of at least 3 people who had pneumonia the same time as me, so yes something is going around.

Sorry you had to go by ambulance. If you're not plugged on both sides, you could use a Netty Pot with saline water to clear your sinuses - this helps a great deal with infections and allergies. Make sure you take all your antibiotics until finished and I pray you feel better soon. It really stinks when you're this sick.

So sorry your asthma has complicated your cold. I've had the same thing happen more than once due to asthma issues. Just love those late night trips to the ER. We've had lots of really nasty respiratory stuff going around down here. I've had lots of students absent for several days at a time. Two of my three sons have had it just recently.

Hope the meds kick it out for you.

(((((((( Perna )))))))))

Colds and stress do not agree with my asthma at all. I have to have regular courses of prednisone to keep the asthma at bay. It is scary having to go to ER, I hope you feel better soon.

Wishing you well Perna. I have been up for the last 3 nights with my son for a upper respiratory infection - it is going around the area here and we are in the UK.

Best wishes - Soup

I'm so sorry you're having to battle the asthma monster, Perna. It's a hateful creature, but you just watch: Someone will do a charity marathon for it!

I got asthma in Florida, & every time I move back it gets worse. This time I had to move an inhalation therapy machine in with me. Maybe one would be good for you?

Oh, great, I'm going to Florida for February

My asthma is adult-onset and pretty mild; it is easily kept under control most of the time with just my Ventolin and Flovent but with this cold I got last week, something went haywire somewhere. I'm better now, just have the last bit of the cold but finished my Pednisone and antibiotic yesterday and seem to be holding my own.

I'm making some dietary changes since I had to anyway when I was feeling so rotten over the weekend; just going to go a bit with no caffeine, sugar, or alcohol, see how/if that helps me over the next couple weeks. So far my blood pressure and pulse have responded really well.

Perna, I am having similar problems. A co-worker was so kind as to "share" her cold with me right before Christmas. I've been sick ever since. Saw my primary care last Monday. I've got a raging sinus infection and bronchitis and my asthma was triggered.

If you are coming to Florida next month come prepared for highly changeable weather, especially if weather changes bother your asthma. It was 80 here a few days ago and in the 30s last night.

I'm going East Coast, just north of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale so expect it will be a bit warmer and a little less changeable. My father-in-law lived in Dunedin, next to Clearwater so I know that weird weather well. He only had a heat pump and, though a transplant from Cape Cod, the cold got him each winter. When we'd visit Christmas or later, even 50 degree nights were cold to him :-)

I'm all cured and feeling pretty well. We'll leave next Monday so I'm scrambling this week to get ready to go. We had house keys made last night for our local friend who's caring for my cats and have backup (stepsons) and contingency plans (next door neighbor). One son is an insurance broker so the next door neighbor can just call him if the house burns down (town houses so presumably the neighbor's would be in trouble too :-) and the neighbor can take over if we have six feet of snow so our friend or one of the sons can't get out here.

I haven't heard a peep out of my asthma since the prednisone. The eating better trial "didn't work", my blood pressure went up again anyway (not high enough that I am concerned about it but higher than it was) and I think that's just me/c-reactive protein versus the prednisone rather than any magic good eating. Was a good week-long+ experiment though, good to know. I didn't have any problem with my asthma last year down in Florida, near where we're going this year. Hope it stays that way.
