... A therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, etc.?
I am on my insurances' website and there are so many to choose from it is overwhelming. I'd hate to choose one I end up not compatible with and have to start my story all over again. So how did you guys find the right one? |

At least you have a choice. Try to see it from the bright side.
Around here, you get a doc, you have zero choice, and it is next to impossible to change to another one. |

Getting a recommendation or referral really helps. Ask your other health care providers if they can recommend anyone they know to be good. my therapist I got by a cold call to names on a list. She turned out not to be that good. My second (and current) one I got from someone who recommended him to my sister for me, and then she passed his name on to me. He's been great! When I needed a family therapist, my therapist recommended someone and he was very good. When my daughter needed a therapist, again, my therapist recommended someone, also good. So I think word of mouth from trusted providers and friends is very helpful.

Referrals are helpful. If a personal reference is not available, you can also ask your physician/office for a recommendation. If you are looking for a particular type a therapy (psycho, CBT, DBT, etc.) that can help pre-screen therapist and psychologists for that particular type of therapy; they cannot prescribe medications. If you are in need of medication therapy, then look for a psychiatrist and again, the same kind of referral from a trusted source can be helpful. You may like whom you've been referred to, but if not, do not hesitate to interview others until you find someone you are comfortable with, so important.
Best wishes! ![]()
